I have an '88 BII converted to manual tranny. I am trying to find a computer that will match my truck. I know it needs to be an '88, fed emissions instead of Cali. and an MT as apposed to an auto. Does 4X4 or 2WD matter? Does manual or push button 4X4 matter? Does it matter if it's from a BII or Ranger? Does it have to be an XLT like mine? Does the tranny used with it matter? I can get one from, an '89 BII 5spd push button 4X4, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work.
My first computer was an '88 BII (I belive) Fed MT, but gave me daytime running lights on the rear. Odd...
This next one was from and '88 Ranger 2wd MT (I belive Fed) and might be suspect for my wiring frying.
I see Sunk is selling his from a '88 Ranger MT 4X4. Would this work?
Thanks in advance, MJ

In a MAF consersionsation between Holyford and I in the throttle body thread, we have discussed that pin #46 is the HEGO return, which is negative. Are you sure that the wires spiced in are not positive? It surely sounds strange. I might recommend you get an EVTM and a basic DMM for diagnosing and fixing the wiring issues. Without it, you're kind of shooting in the dark. It sounds like there is a short and could simply be verified with a DMM.

FWIW, I don't recall seeing any different diagrams for any other type of computer they put into a 1988 2.9L Ranger in my 1988 EVTM. It's possible that there might be something added or changed that they would denote if there is any change between the two. As far as being 2 completely pin outs, this would seem very unlikely.

It will work fine.

the computer has nothing to do with the lights.
HOWEVER a "Bad computer can reverse power the brake lamps
because the computer does have a ground path through the
tail light circuit via the BOO (Brake On/Off) circuit

Possible? Yes. Likely? No

I have just bought one for this very reason. I haven't spliced any wires so that woiuldn't be an issue. Thanks.

AllanD,
Your awsome. Thanks. I'm surprised the '89 computer would work. I figured they changed up the wiring when they updated the truck. Especialy with the fuse box under the hood and such. That will make it a lot easier to get ahold of. As for the 4X4 thing, asked just 'cause it would figure. :D The push button running wiring and such.
Thanks again both of you for the insight, MJ
