My '94 2.3 Ranger evidently has a compression issue - which has been going on for years now without much of a change. I can't park on an incline because the truck will gradually slip downhill... one piston stoke at a time. The truck runs fine and even accelerates fairly well. I haven't done a compression test, but I'm wondering if this sounds like a familiar problem to any of you and if there are any options other than replacing the rings.

if it's rings there is no way to get around buying them unless you want to park on flat ground all the time. or move to ohio :) but seriously do the compression test or run the engine open the oil cap and feel for blow by. blow by could be rings or valves leaking.

blow by is not a cause of the valves leaking.. leaking valves would cause a miss

but you do need to run a compression test and/or a leakdown test.....

i'm pretty sure if the intake valve leaks you could feel it come through the valve cover... not 100% but its still worth testing.

BB... think for a moment.... air enters thu the TB, down the intake, valve opens, air enters the cylinder, valve closes piston moves up compressing the air fuel mixure....

Now if the Intake valve is cracked off the seat at this point, compression is lost, and shoved back into the intake track.. popping thu the TB... (not heard thu the VC)

now if the exhaust valve is cracked of the seat. compression is lost, causing the A/F to ingnite in the exhast stream.. backfire...( not heard thu the VC)

Now Both valves are sealed, and you hear it thu the valve cover... means it is comming past the rings, into the oil pan then flowing up thu the oil return ports into the VC and out the oil filler hole.

and if you will say valve seals, nope.. unles the guides are very worn, and the seal is gone, compressed air will not get to the seal

I am 100%

yeah you're right. i was having a brain fart. thanks bogussvo. i got the compression and leakdown test a little intertwined for some reason. should have remebered that lol. idk, 20 different college classes start messing with your thoughts after a little bit. hey, i'm curious as to where you got ur turbo kit? finally got the money and i'm looking at one off of a xr4ti.
