My 2010 Ranger Sport auto transmission column shift lever is really sloppy and has a lot of play.
Is this common ? Can it be tightened ?

Yes, fairly common
All Ford Trucks use similar column shifter and all have this same problem
But there are a few different causes
Google: ford ranger loose column shifter
Could be just 2 loose screws, but could be shift tube which requires a bit more disassembly to fix
