cold air question

A
For the cold air controversy, I'm surprised no one here has used a temp probe, in the airstream close to the motor end of the air tube, and compared stock systems with after market devices. (If someone has, I'm sorry I missed the results)

I haven't done this on the Exploder, but I have on a number of small cars.

Every fuel injected engine has a temperature probe built in, called the "air charge temperature" sensor. You grab your favorite scan tool to read it off anything 1996 and newer (and a number of older models as well), in real time.

You very quickly find that unless there is a heated air intake, the air charge temperature is quite close to ambient even at idle. If there is a heated air intake, it will be tens of degrees warmer at idle, but not at much higher RPM.

My cold air intake

I totally agree that a cold air intake adds power AND sounds way better than stock. However, I ran into a couple problems after installing mine. I purchased a BOMZ Racing Cold Air intake. It installed fine, and even had a mounting spot for the MAF. However, after since installing it I can't seem to get my idle to stay normal. At first I dissconnected the battery thinking that the computer just needed to be reset. This didn't help anyhing. Next I bought some MAF cleaner and cleaned the MAF. at the same time I had the intake all apart I put some K&N Filter Oil onto the filter. I think this was a mistake (seeing as it wasn't a K&N filter). Since putting it back together my engine either barely holds and idle, or it's idling way too high (2000-2500rpm). I think I need to replace my filter and keep it dry this time. Then either clean my MAF again, or replace that too. I have no vacuume leaks either.

I would say the first thing you need to do is put the stock intake back on, clean your MAF, and see if the problem goes away. You've modified a system and started having problems. Instead of throwing random ideas at it, try logically tracking down the issue, starting with the first thing you changed before this issue came up.

I won't comment on the "cold air intake adds power" thing.

More noise probably, but no more power. Butt dynos aren't accurate at all!!

Do yourself and your truck a big favor and go back to the stock (paper) filter, and intake.
