For the cold air controversy, I'm surprised no one here has used a temp probe, in the airstream close to the motor end of the air tube, and compared stock systems with after market devices. (If someone has, I'm sorry I missed the results)
I haven't done this on the Exploder, but I have on a number of small cars.
Every fuel injected engine has a temperature probe built in, called the "air charge temperature" sensor. You grab your favorite scan tool to read it off anything 1996 and newer (and a number of older models as well), in real time.
You very quickly find that unless there is a heated air intake, the air charge temperature is quite close to ambient even at idle. If there is a heated air intake, it will be tens of degrees warmer at idle, but not at much higher RPM.
