cold air question

As the owner of a company that manufactures the components used in a mass produced cold air induction system, I do have real world experience!

Just so you know, this SUBSTANTIALLY biases your claims. You are not at all a neutral party. You have a financial stake in one answer.

And drag race results are only appropriate if the goal here is drag racing. NO ONE does performance testing at part throttle, and quite a lot of "performance" complaints we get here are that someone has to downshift on hills. Filters don't affect that (except if they foul the MAF). Most of the people here either drive their trucks on city streets or on unpaved trails, mud bogs, and so on. A "free flowing" filter is bad advice especially for the latter case. Mounting the filter in the fog light valence is also highly inappropriate for any vehicle that will be doing any water crossings, at least not without a secondary intake at a much higher location.

We don't know what the original poster's intent is, but the odds are against it being the same as yours.

You'll also find that most of the performance complaints -- and performance claims -- we see confuse power, torque and acceleration.

Also you results with the intake and filter mod came after exhaust mods, so that really doesn't help us any with comparing stock intake to after market "cold air" intake

As for power #'s regarding free flow induction on a Ranger, how about this instead?

-Bone stock 1991 Ranger 4.0L 5pd
16.661 @ 78 mph

-Borla headers & 2.5" Exhaust & 3.55 gears & slicks
15.870 @ 81mph

-Custom 3" air intake & 12" K&N air filter
15.624 @83 mph

-422 Cam & 95tm heads
14.82 @ 90 mph

What gears were in it stock? Tire size stayed the same I assume?

Exhaust, whatever the difference in gears and tires was gained it almost .8 of a second, the cold air gained .2 on its own. I also assume these are averages and not just a single run, a human driver with different weather can easily vary by the difference in times you are reporting. I would also guess it would gain alot less if the other things were not done to the truck. I know they can compliment other mods, but on their own they are more or less a conversation peice. You went about it the right way by opening up the exhaust first, but with a stock exhaust your results wouldn't be quite so rosey.

Ad hominem attacks, obfuscation, denial, missed points, and so on.

This discussion is now over.

Believe what you want. I see enough obfuscation in that last post to disregard it in its entirety.

why wait to get banned? juss piss off lol. If your statments ARE true, and this is just a therory, is that small gain in power worth the money? no, can you REALY honestly feel the gain, no way in hell. You dont know it, but ppl dont notice a change in performance in somthing untill it is a 10% gain, or a 10% loss. If you want to argue that, I will gladly email you the details in how to diagnose performance issues in a $300 000 doller piece of equipment. I REALY hate to say this, but right now, you are making canadians look imature, ignorent and argumentative.

Did I hurt your feelings Mike?

At least it gave you an out!

Here's another for you though!!

This board would be a much better place without your ignorant posts!!

I find that the majority of your posts are insulting not only to those with knowledge, but also to those who wish to learn.

Often your answers are based on hearsay, have absolutely no credibility, and also are directed to those who ask in a very demeaning fashion.

You of all people should realize that there are many individuals with far greater knowledge regarding the automotive industry! Why not use that to your advantage as a learning tool!

You may have the wool pulled over the eyes of members of this forum, but I see right through you, and I'm sure there are others!

GAWD I hope I get banned soon!!!!:icon_confused:

dude, stop holding back.maybe you will feel better if you get it off your chest?mike has been around awhile and contributes a good deal of info to those in need.he can be crasse at times, and he can be wrong, but mostly he is pretty close to right on.we argue with him for fun,but a personal attack is childish and unwarranted.dissagree if you want, but you owe mike an apology imo.

If you've been hanging around a dyno, then you should be able to get some real numbers. Care to post some hp and torque curves? Do you any data on the delta P's associated with the stock intake vs. the aftermarket at different flow rates?

And just so you know, you stated that you were a supplier of parts used in cold air intakes. This means you have a direct financial link to the sales of these parts. And just because you are a supplier for some of the parts, that doesn't make you an expert on the whole system. Try calming down a little bit and giving some rational responses instead of acting like an idiot.

Dang, twice in one day I agree with MAKG. I too have done a lot of dyno work - testing everything from Redline oil to restrictor plates. Air is funny stuff - in 1982 we were making just under 500 hp with a 2.5 liter motor pulling air through a 40mm restrictor plate. . . OK it was turboed - but - the air coming through the intercooler to the motor was still hot as the dickens. Just cooling the air is not the answer. The ENGINEERS at Ford who designed that stuff understand how much air the engine needs - how cool it needs to be - how much will go through the hole or whatever diameter. There is a lot more physics to understanding horsepower and you can't make major improvements by changing out parts.

what if i jam a 12 volt bilge pump into my intake, will that creat boost?....sorry, i had to, this discussion has gone down hill...Good points woody...I hope some ppl are learning hear

Ha Ha LOL LOL!!!!

now hey, what if i get a cold air intake, plump the bilge pump into it, then use the medical grade O2 for the extra boost in hp lol

Better stop....some people might take it seroiusly and kill themselves...LOL
