hi i dont know if this is the right section but i was wondering if there is a company out there that makes a cold air intake for a 1990 4l ranger

if this isnt the right section can u tell me which one is?
thanks

Oh god here we go again lol ,let the firing commence from both side !!!!!!!

Ford made a Cold Air Intake for you, back in 1990. Its already on your truck. :icon_thumby:

+1. Nah, it's cool. No flaming here. It's true. The O.E. intake is a cold air intake. If you want get a factory replacement K&N or what ever choice filter. It won't get you into the 13's in the quarter but it will help by not having to buy another air filter.

first off i know we have different engines.....and i dont have a cold air intake on my BII, i just bought one of those $20 cone filters from autozone many years back. it may take away from my HP, i dont know....never done a dyno, but it makes it much faster. the old intake was awful and i'd never put it back in my 88. i'm thinkin about using some pvc piping to jam some actual cold air in there, but i got tons of other stuff to do first.

so to conclude my rambling, if you wanna go cheap, go to autozone and get one of cone filters and see what it does for you. if you open the package right i bet you could even return it if you dont like it.

Howdy, the air intake on your Stock1990 4.0 truck is a cold air intake. Its just not pretty and has no chrome. But it IS a cold air intake.

By putting on a K&N you are in effect doing only a couple things. First. You are Not improving HP. You are Not getting Cold air. It May sound better but thats it.

AND!

The cost difference between a stock air filter and the K&N is about 9 times the cost of the stock air filter. Thats Not including the original cost of the K&N. in effect it will take 9 years or so of buying OEM filters to cover the cost of just 1 K&N filter.

ALSO

There are also some people on this site that have posted Dynoed trucks with and without k&N filters. their results show HP going down with the K&N

ALSO

There are Other people demonstrating what looks to me like a excellent method of determining which air filters work best for actually particulate filtration. the K&N came in pretty much dead last.

Ok, I am done. Whos next!

thanks everyone 4 the help

im gonna have to get new gears soon to handle the tires but i cant do this right now so is there a pretty cheap way to increase the hp?

The thing is my friend. You have a 4.0. Its a damn good engine its not designed to be a race car.

Its a Low end torque engine. It will haul full sized loads around without any trouble. It will PULL full sized trucks out of the ditch while their owners are going. No way a ranger did that?! It will Pull one of those cute ricer cars backwards with them full on throttle and you are barely doing anything.

It will run pretty much forever so long as you do the usual maintenance on it.

There isn't much you can do to it without spending large amounts of money and the gains from spending that much money you could have swapped in a 5.0 v8 from a mustang. which WILL get you more HP.

Superchargers and Turbos are the only two bolt on products can will get you and significant increases in hp for the money. Good luck finding a supercharger for a 4.0.

So if you had the patience to read all of that. Regearing is the easiest and cheapest method to get a faster off the line truck. But take note that if you have a 4x4 you need to replace both front and rear gears to match. And last but not least. you Lose the upper end when you gear for off the line speed.
