Cold air intake 2008 fx4

Hey everyone im new to this forum, just picked up an 08 ranger fx4 and wanted to start with a cold air intake, then maybe move to an exhaust or what not, came accross this website... can anyone tell me what they think of this

Not a bad Idea, until you hit a bump and destroy the factory air box. I assume that a 2008 FX4 will be spending some time off road, and need somewhere for the tire to go.

ya gotta be careful with mods like that these days with newer cars because the vast amount of measurement that pcms take are insane! and little leak in the intake, even b4 the throttle body will throw code and cause i rough run concern

might be OK in arizona, but your filter would get trashed in a wet climate. even with his little PVC 90* on there. ever watch a car driving down a wet highway? water gets flung everywhere inside the wheel wells. on top of that, your engine will be forcefully pulling air INward...along with any dirt and water in the area.

holy! thanks everyone for the quick replies!! i posted, went to make some dinner and my questions have been answered, for the record the truck has almost 29000km on it, so i bought it off a lease that was returned. there is a bit of warranty left

As for offroading, as of now i dont plan on doing it as often as i would like to, because i am in canada, and i dont know one person that goes offroading, so it makes it a bit difficult. so do you all recommend the CAI then? i also was wondering about exhaust, should i stick with single? go to dual?

the factory intake is already cold air. if you want an increase in intake noise, then throw a K&N cone filter on there...just dont expect any performance gains.

same with exhaust. the only point in changing it is for noise...there are no performance gains to be had.

And just FYI, that site is showing a 4.0L from a older Ranger. The newer 4.0L SOHC have the air box at the corner of the rad support and right fender.

Headers or a chip? There are some things that may get you "performance", what are the plans for the truck?

i dont know, i dont really have any plans as of yet, i was kinda of hoping of getting some suggestions from others with prior experiences, what they found to be the most worth while upgrades, stuff like that

was hoping to eventually put some bigger tires on it, not sure what size, but have to be realistic cuz its my everyday driver, a nice roll bar maybe some extra lights

so as for air and what not, is CIA not really a great upgrade to go for, what should i do then just replace the factory drop in with a k&n filter? upgrade the exhaust at all?

a K&N drop in filter isnt going to increase power either. it does have certain advantages over a paper filter though. if you plan on keeping your truck for a long time, it will pay for itself in paper filter savings. they also hold up well to extremely dusty or wet conditions (they are just better constructed then paper filters, since they are meant to be reusable).

like i said, your stock intake is already cold air...installing an aftermarket intake is not going to change anything....and could even cost you power depending on the quality of the kit.

headers provide a noticeable boost on older vehicles with the old log manifolds. your truck already has a decently flowing header/manifold thing on it...gains from aftermarket headers will be minimal.

a chip is your best bet for a noticeable increase. after that look into re-gearing. aside from that, theres not much else you can do without making major changes to the engine.

I'd just leave the engine stock. It's already got enough power for anything you would want for a DD and much more.

Personally, I'd consider aftermarket exhaust just because of the noise factor. It kind of creates the illusion that you've got more ponies under the hood if you can hear the effects of the skinny pedal.

Maybe some nice wheels and tires would be cool too...I don't know what you're running now, but lots of people around here run BFG all terrains and they're real nice for a daily driver. They last forever too. Some of those with a nice set of chrome wheels would be bitchin.

Also, how about a spray in bedliner?

Consider a programmer instead of the chip. The chips are problematic and require some labor to install/remove. A programmer is about $100 more, but it can read codes, and make changes to the PCM. Additionally, if you have a warranty problem, 5 minutes with the programmer at the OBDII port and it is removed with no evidence it was ever in there. My .02.
