Coil Springs

Im putting 2inch spacers on my front coil springs for my '97 ranger....i realize i will need a coil spring compressor and i think external, but not sure? And any advice on this would be greatly appriciated. THanks

You will not need a coil spring compressor. Place a jack stand under the frame of of the truck. Then jack up one side of the axle you plan on working on first. Remove the lower retaining nut and washer with a 1-1/8" wrench. Lower the jack and rotate the spring counter clockwise. It will fall out.

Repeat for the other side.

If you disconnect the sway bar first it will make things easier.

Yeah my buddy did his 4in. spring in his garage with just a jack and who wants to work with a compressed spring. I like all my fingers

i tried to lower the axle but mine wont go down but like 2 inches....and i took the sway bar off too.

it will go down farther just force it down...but not to hard
you took the shock off right?

yea i took the shock off, im just getting a coil compressor and taking my chances with my fingers

it should come right out. i even have 4" lift springs and f150 spacers and mine arent that bad to get in and out... takes a little work but nothing you need a compressor for.

do you have the brake caliper off because the brake line will limit how far the beam will drop...?

I still have that on but the axle just wont drop. I have no clue

I've never once had to use a compressor on mine either. Like said the springs should just fall right out if both the swaybar and shock are disconnected.

I guess no harm can come from using a compressor though (at least as long as it doesn't come apart on you. Ranger springs are pretty stout under load).

maybe the axle beam bushing is froze up some how? thats just weird.

ok so i used a floor jack to finally get one of my coil springs out....but and a big but now i cant get the flipping huge 1 1/8'' nut out that holds the bottom of the spring onto the truck. so the top of the spring is free, no tension at all, but the spring is still attached.

you cant get the nut out... or you cant get it loose? you should be able to get your fingers between the coils and spin it off if its already loose... go through the top of the bucket with extentions and a 1 1/8" socket... wrench between the coils...

give us a pic of what your lookin at... this really shouldnt be that hard.

i have not really done any of my own mechanic work but i changed my front coils to explorer coils my self with just removing the front shock and it came out so easy. I got both sides done in probably 1 1/2 hours of work time.
