I have a 98 ranger rwd. VIN comes back as a splash body style but does have a splash bed. I assumed it was an XL before I looked up the VIN at work (I work at advance auto) I was told it would either have coil spring OR torsion bar. Mine has both. Would that come stock or was one or the other maybe added to the truck at some point before I ended up with it. It started out as a old beater for 300 bucks that barely ran. Now it runs good and focusing on suspension and steering parts but a little confused over this haha. Any and all help/questions are welcome.

they either have coil springs OR torsion bars not both from the factory. The reason for this is that they are both springs to hold up the front end and are not used together. You may be mistaking the anti roll bar for a torsion bar.

I second the pic request so we know for sure what you are talking about.

See that's what I thought that they had one or the other. I could be mistaken I've only glanced under it while doing a caliper job. Haven't really actually looked at it I just assumed it was torsion bar. I'll try to get a few pics of it

I think you would have noticed a big coil spring... if it had one.

Someone may have put coil over shocks?

Is it 4WD?

I know it has coil springs. I was wondering if it had torsion bar also from what I thought was maybe a torsion bar. (I'm not a mechanic just always done most of my own repairs) first truck I've owned though. And no it's rwd like it says lol

I thought the same thing but I have never seen coil overs used on the front with coil springs also. Ive seen it in the rear and as a replacement for the coils/torsion but never a combination.

Never underestimate what some folks do...

I was actually thinking torsion bars with coil overs. Might even be one of those coil springs with muffler clamps on the shock to keep them in place,

Your right. What I was looking at is the stabilizer bar. I feel dumb now but I've never messed with anything having to do with suspension before haha I appreciate the help man.

We all started somewhere and knowing the part and what it does goes a long way with diagnosis of issues. Happy wrenching. (y)
