HI there..I've been chasing a CEL when warmed up for a little bit....

I finally tried to read he codes using the CEL..
as near as i can determine....sorting thru the various "blinks"...

i get a pretty consistant 22, then 14 via KOEO..
I have been trying to read up on the causes....and have the definitions....

I runs great....and doesn't stumble....

I have been a little concerned about the 14, kinda hate to pull this diz to check that hall effect thing...what is everyone's experience?...clean the connections check grounds etc?....

also on this "88" i can't seem to find the "orange" ground wire I've seen before...did they quit doing that?...

additionaly..i was told the previous dropped an "89" motor in when it was rebuilt...haven't dug deep enuf to determine that ..yet

in 88' and up have done away with the EGR...with that the ECM is programed not to look for the signal from it. I sure there is some wiring differences,,,,it might not be orange in your case.

don't let the pulling the distributor and putting in a new pick-up /hall effect in scare you ...it sounds worse than it is...I too was intimidated by it at 1st...once I got going...it wasn't too bad. prolly the hardest part was going back together...resetting the distrib back in & getting timing correct. difficult... maybe. not impossible

as for the 22 code....sure you don't have a vacuum leak.

thanks 4 the push forward...

thanks for gettin back to me...so you think that with a code 14 it is likely i may need to check that sensor?....

I'm not afraid to pull it..and i have a spare diz that i bought as a spare from an 87. Of course since that thing isn't the easiest to get at I'd rather not unless the prevailing vote would be to do so if i keep getting a code 14...

I have built many engines over the years and a distributor doesn't bother me...getting used to this TFI has been kinda interesting i have to say...

you really think that a code 14 will cause me to lose pip signal sooner or later?...

I guess i should just chose a day and do it....I'm aware of the "getting it back in time issue"....just a little lazy i guess...i guess i'll ask one more time..."will it really fail me soon"?..(c0de 14) I've never had a computer tell me when to work on it...but i guess if it needs to be done...It's prolly a good thing

the next question..."whose sensor are you going to trust when you buy one?"...it is the most important sensor on the motor....oh well

about a vacuum leak..i've been chasing them some since this motor has been replaced...That I'll do 2marrow...

AS to "when"...anybody's guess. leave you it will.

Look at it as needed maintenance.

No real preference to brand of Pick-up coil/sensor ....get one with warranty behind it. There seems to be a influx of poorly manufactured components lately.
But your dealing with a electrical devise...options maybe limited.

some of the big draw to swap in a 4.0 is that you go distributorless ignition
more stable,less moving parts

I have run into that quality thing...

In my travels to get back to "working on my own car"...and trying to find good replacement parts.

I am told by my local suppliers that it is very hard to find anything but Asian replacement parts anymore...

a case in point Autozone lists that "pickup coil" for 20$..my local Ford dealer can score me an NOS oem for 75$..discounted even..makes it hard to justify...but i think for me..since this part is so critical...i will pay the $75...
(I also like the neighboring town's Ford dealership having bought a few cars there over the years)...

I have decided to keep a few "spares" of things that i can scrounge..distributors, coils, TFI modules, eec-IV puters..as i find them....i guess it makes for at least a retirement hobby...keepin these rigs we own tickin along....

again thanks for the comeback...I've enjoyed your posts....and I like your sig as well

we have a lot in common....
