clutch sliping

i have a 86 ford ranger 2.9l engine 5 speed transmission 4 wheel drive. and the clutch slips going uphill. could this be my clutch slave cylinder. or just my clutch or both. and sometimes the clutch fluid dissapears and i cant find where it goes. this is my first truck. i am really interested in learning about transmissons and just mechanics itself. any information would be great. thanks

The slipping is the clutch. The added load of the hill causes it to slip because it is worn down and not getting enough pressure from the pressure plate. The fluid leaking is probably your slave....i forget if the slave is internal on the 86? If it is...you will replace it anyways when you have the tranny out.

well just changed everything, your clutch is burnt and you do everything that relates to ($360 ,if you made it)otherwise more
probably your slave valve is extern I think

I believe '86 is the year they switched to internal slaves.

ok i figured i might as well change the slave valve, clutch, and shifter bushing since i have to get in there anyway. any recomended brands?

Luk seems well-made, which is what I'm using.
You might also consider a 4.0L clutch upgrade at the same time, the bigger 4.0L clutch is better than the little 2.9 clutch in pretty much every way imaginable.

i figured out my clutch is deffinitely burnt because i drove it to town today and on my way home you would let out the clutch and it hardley went anywhere. and i would like to get a heavy duty clutch. any ideas on a brand?

is the 2.3l clutch the same as a 2.9l clutch
