Hey guys, just a quick question. I'm ordering a clutch tomm and I wanted to make sure I'm getting the right thing. I've got an 89 BII with an M5OD, I want to order a clutch from a 90-92 Explorer/Ranger 4.0L correct? I just wasn't 100% positive about the year I'm supposed to order.

Yeah any 1st gen explorer(4.0L) would work, just make sure you got a starter from the same
rig to match....(a 2.8/2.9 starter wont work. check the tech lib.)

Don't think he will have to switch the starter if he is just switching the clutch disc and pressure plate. Unless he is going to switchout the flywheel as well.

You are a dope.

You can't put a 10 inch clutch on a 2.8/2.9 flywheel. The new clutch is 10 inches across, the old one only 8 2/3. That makes the old flywheel at most 9.5 inches across. There is no way to get a 4.0 clutch and pressure plate bolted to a 2.9 flywheel.

You need, from a 91-97 Ranger/Explorer 4.0L:
flywheel
clutch kit
starter for a manual trans (they are different)
a new 60" 4 gauge battery cable
a roll of 10-12 gauge wire
Tow packs of eyelets: One set big enough to fit over your starter relay post, one big enough to fit over your starter solenoid trigger post.

The trigger post is the one with the wire that says "do not remove". Its easier to make your own wire and take that one off than to splice/crimp your new wire onto that one.

Got all that stuff, lol. Basically I bought a whole tranny swap setup but the clutch the guy sent me which had "80% life left" actually had about 25% life left, the disc was almost to the rivets and when I mic'd it the specs were already considerably below the lowest factory tolerances. So anyways...long story short...I need a 91-97 explorer 4.0L clutch correct?

yeah, just go get a clutch from a 91 ranger 4.0. I just did this one, so now when I need clutch/tranny parts, I go look for parts from the year of the donor vehicle, (in my case 91).

As long as he has an M5OD already, he should only need the clutch kit. I have installed at least 6 10" clutches behind 2.9's without M5OD's, got to do a little clearance work on the inside of the bell housing, but they work great.

I've put 1 10"inch clutch on a 2.9L. Seems to me that putting a 10 inch 4.0L clutch onto the 9.5 inch diameter 2.9L flywheel would not work too terribly well.

Just basic math and physics there. I mean, I ain't too smart :icon_confused:, but it sure does seem simple to me.

Clutch kits usually come with a slave cylinder make sure your hose plugs in to the new slave. It really sucks to put in your new trans to find the hose won't fit. They changed slightly in the early 90's.

Where are you getting your clutch kits? I'm gonna start shopping there. I get them with throw-out bearings all the time, but never with slaves.
