I have lost the clutch on my 2000 Ranger with a three liter. I checked the reservoir and it was dry so I added fluid. That did nothing; I still have to drive totally without the clutch. That made for a long trip home. I am thinking there is air in the line but I have never had a Ranger this new. So, before I start throwing parts at it or looking for something that might not be there, is there a common quirt I should look at or for on this truck? I would guess the clutch should be replaced anyway because of the high mileage. Even though the master cylinder appeared to be empty, I can find no signs of a leak. What would some of you do right now to diagnose the problem if it was your truck?

If the reservoir was dry, air no doubt got into the system and it needs to be bled.

Usual cause for a dry reservoir is a leaking slave cylinder. Not always is the leak readily noticeable.

Is there a seal that goes bad or does it usually require a new one all together?

Usually a bad or worn seal and/or contaminated fluid.

They are replaced as a unit. Flush some clean fluid through the master so any dirty fluid and/or debris that might be in it doesn't wind up in the new slave.

Also (if you haven't already), see the sticky post up top here for tips on bleeding. These things can be a PITA if the proper procedures aren't used due to the position of the master.

I have been doing some ready on that. I had no idead they were such a pain.

Just started to notice mine was leaking into the cab the other day..Im holding my breath until the last minute to fix it. Havent noticed any difference in the clutch yet, so Im waiting it out.

After watching the videos and taking the piston out last night. I can now see it is better to just rip it all out at one time and redo everything then.
