Clutch job.

So I'm working on changing the clutch on my 89 BII. The tranny is COVERED in black dirt/oil crap. Is it all from bad valve covers? Or would it be from a bad slave? The clutch is dry. The flywheel is dirty where the clutch doesn't contact. The goop is inside the bell housing just as bad as it is outside.

Also, shouldn't clutch fluid come out of the hose when it's disconnected from the slave? The pedal was stuck after I got the trans out. After it broke loose some fluid came out but not much.

pictures didn't work.

the black crap on the outside is probably just oil/dirt from the valve covers and/or intake manifold

the crap on the inside is likely just from clutch material

and the reason fluid doesn't come out of the hydraulic line when you unhook the slave cyl is because there is a check valve in the end of the line that only allows fluid to flow when the line is attached or you push the "button" in
 
so was something damaged by pushing the clutch with the line disconnected?

Doubt it. If anything you just put enough pressure on it to overcome the check valve. If it wasn't dripping out the end of the line after that then you are fine.
 
I'll have to see if it is dripping or not. if it is do I need a new line? I planned on bleeding it anyway since the reservoir was empty when I purchased the vehicle.
 
Probably not. The check valve is more to keep the master cylinder from getting air in it if the line is disconnected for a long time. Once you hook it up again it should be fine.
 
Personally I would replace the slave while you have it apart, When you take your flywheel off to have it machined check the "ball bearings" that block the holes in the block for leaking oil, Have seen lots of those leak, Rear main is also common as well as the input shaft of the trans. If it is dry black its more than likely clutch dust though, The clutch master being emty when you bought it kind of makes me think the slave may be dribbling fluid out though, just a though.
 
clutch dust and road grime usually are the ones to blame.
 
I plan on doing the rear main, the slave, and a complete clutch kit. flywheel doesn't look like it needs machined. the pressure plate side of the clutch is where all the wear is on the old clutch.
 
Run a finder nail over the entire width of the fly wheel. If it catches even a bit, or if there is any blue on the flywheel, I'd get it machined.
 
get it machined or replaced anyways. You will thank yourself.
