How do you take off the clutch fan on a 1990 2.9 v6 Ranger?

The clutch (with fan) simply unscrews, the opposite direction of the fan's rotation. You can rent wrenches for this from auto parts stores (I just use a mallet and brass rod and tap the clutch loose).

Once off, the fan unbolts (4) from the clutch.

Are you sure they used that method back in 1990? My '93 four cylinder still has the style that has four bolts that go through the fan and pulley and bolts to the water pump.

2.9l should use the screw on kind of fan clutch in 1990

It uses standard threads so "lefty loosy-righty tighty" :)

But easy way to tell if its standard thread or reverse thread is to look at the water pump pulley
If its smooth then regular threads
If it has ribs then Reverse threads(like 3.0l)

But the fan clutch nut is hard to break loose regardless of thread direction, lol, because you need to hold the water pump shaft tight to loosen the fan clutch nut
There is a Ford tool set for that: https://www.amazon.ca/Powerbuilt-647074-Ford-Clutch-Wrench/dp/B004KEJXGE?th=1
Not recommending this set, but it has images on how it works :)
The wider wrench goes around the 4 water pump pulley bolts to hold it from turning

You can use a strap wrench on water pump pulley to hold it
Or if you loosen one of the 4 bolts on the pulley you can use a screw driver behind the bolt as a lever to hold pulley

Once you break it loose it easily unscrews

Pretty sure, without pulling a manual or going out and looking (although, I am getting to where I can't remember if my memory still works).

If memory serves, the 2.3 clutch and fan does use 4 bolts to the water pump. The Cologne V6 engines have the fanclutch thread onto the water pump, but the 2.9 loosens one way and the 4.0 loosens the other way (which of course threw me for a loop going from one to the other!). I think the difference being whether it's V-belt or serpentine. The fan bolts to the clutch from behind.

The 3.0 I don't have any experience with.

@wagszrx ,
It is easiest accomplished the fan clutch removal is with the Ford fan/clutch removal tool kit. It contains the correct size wrench for the large nut and a spanner wrench to hold two of the 5 bolts that hold the pulley onto the water pump (which sits behind the fan's nut), while turning the large fan/clutch nut...lefty lost 🙂

The kit sells for $20-$25 dollars, nearly any auto parts store, Amazon, eBay and yes The Walmart.com.

Ha ha! Autospill and autoconnect will be the death of all of us human servants.

I'd like to believe that AI is responsible for the 🌈 society; it helps me make sense of it.

What do you mean smooth?

I got a two piece set from Auto Zone that had three pieces, so I decided to buy that set, I think it was only around 25. Amazon wants 47plus!

If I would have looked at the new water pump, I bought several days ago I would have noticed the reverse thread on the pump.
Would have saved myself Alotta trouble.

@wagszrx ,
The water pump isn't reverse threaded. The big fan/clutch NuT is installed righty-tighty and removed by rotating the nut to the left...left-loosie, facing the engine, lefty-loosie.
