Ok so i am going to do a fuel injection swap onto my 2.8.I have a 1984 Ranger standard cab and i will be swapping in an 89 fuel pump and sending unit. will an 89 fuel gauge cluster fit where my old one is? I would also like to add a Tach if possible.

ok then how about this then... According to carter fuel pumps and their part application guide it says that the fuel pump for a 1990 ford ranger part number P74528S this part fits rangers from 1989 through 1997 as well as for the 2.9, 2.3, 3.0 and the 4.0. would it be reasonable to assume that the gauges from these vehicles will work with this pump/sending unit. what I want to know is there a way to modify my dash gauge cluster to accept the cluster out of an 89 and up ranger into my 84 ranger standard cab? Or will the gauge out of an 86 87 or 88 ranger correspond with the new pump and sending unit? I am assuming that ford did not change the values for the sending unit and the gauge.

89 and newer senders do not match 88 and older fuel gages. You need to swap to a gen 2 dash to use the gen 2 cluster, or use an older sender.

will a newer pump fit on the older assembly for the sender?

I am interested as well. I've got an 88 that eats fuel pumps. Gotta that problem sorted, but I still need a new sending unit and high pressure pump. I'd rather just get an in tank to handle it all.

What is different about the pre-89 and post-89 gauges?

Yes, with some modifications.

The ohm values.

i have an 86 ranger and for the higher fuel pressure i just put a fuel pump for a v8 on it

Now the big question. will it fit into the original 2.8 tank? If not than Why? does it not fit or are there baffles in an fi? or something?

What fuel line did you use to connect the pump to the sending unit?

Regular fuel line won't hold up being submerged in gas, I used fuel injection line, it seems to hold, dunno how long.
