Cluster Question

What is the last year cluster that I can easily fit into a first gen dash?
I'm going to a 4.0 eventually, and I am thinking I might go for OBDII. OBDII can get upset if it doesn't see the IC (some years). So I'm trying to find a gauge cluster that will satisfy the PCM, but also fit my dash easily.

Will a 96 IC work?

i used a 91 cluster with my first gen dash when i first swapped out the original 2.0 for a dual plug 2.3, and to be honest, it didnt look so pretty. i tried fabbing up several different plates to go around it and none of them ever looked quite right to me at least. i would try to wire up the gauges that you have to work with the new harness, but then again it would probably be just as easy to swap out the whole dash for a newer one.

Well I guess then, the next question would be, since I love my little dash alcove there above the glove box and don't really want to give that up, does anyone know if the dash pad from the 1st gen will swap over to the 2nd or 3rd gen dash?

i guess that it would be pretty close width wise. i have a 2nd gen as well that i have been using for parts. i could take some measurements for you, but then again, you would run into the same problem making a surround for the cluster., not to mention you would have to cut up a good 2nd or 3rd gen dash.
