Not to worried about this no,w considering it is 15 degrees outside, but in the summer when I first turn my A/C on in my 98 3.0L ranger, I hear a loud clunk from where I believe to be under the truck but i can't really tell. Anyone ever had this problem or know what it is?

Its your compressor cycling, it will also do it if you turn your heater on defrost or bi-level. My truck does this and at first I couldn't figure it out and I thought it was backfiring but it would only do it so often, I had to open the hood to figure it out but im sure thats what your hearing. There is really nothing else that could be related to your A/C, I could be wrong though.

sounds like the ac clutch engaging, you wont hear it disengage, but when the magnet recieves power it locks onto the pulley pretty fast and thats probably the clunk youre hearing.
