ok i got a dryer that does not heat up....i dont think it is that old....it is a kenmore 70's serise...does not produce hot heat...is there a reset switch or something???....how do i check to see if the heating coil is fucked?

make sure that all the lint is out of it. if it gets lint up in the ductwork behind the lint screen, it will not dry worth a crap.

also check your breaker to make sure it is not half tripped...your dryer breaker is a two switch breaker that is bridged with a metal bar on the handle. you might have one side of the breaker trip and not the other, allowing the dryer to run but not heat up.

if it is putting out air and it is not hot or is only warm, you might have a bad or two bad heating elements. if you can get the cabinet off where you can access the terminals of the elements, you can test them w/ a continuity checker or ohmmeter. if they have continuity, they are good, and your problem lies elsewhere. while you have the cabinet apart, check to see if there are any fuses or fusible links that might be blown.

If any fuses are blown, find out why. it might be that you have lint build up in the dryer not allowing proper airflow and thus overheating the dryer.

ditto to the above...if you have them on separate fuses (older homes have these) then the one for the heater element may be toast...or the heater element itself could be fried...easy to fix, if you can find the parts for an older dryer...

could be any number of things. Ditto to the above suggestions plus. check the connections where they enter the machine, they tend to break. also there is a switch on the motor that turns off the element when the motor stops. there's also a button switch or sometimes two on the element housing that sometimes fail to reset.

There are also 2 or 3 Limit swtichs that tend to go out on that model of dryer. there is a high and a low limit switch there are inside the dryer.

Take the back off of it and clean it. I had a coin fall down inside mine and short out the heating element circuit.
