It may not be ther prefered method, but I did just the same last weekend and I also pressure washed the seats in addition to the carpet (in addition to cleaner and a brush). They took a bit longer to dry as opposed to the carpet but I have another car to drive so it gave plenty of time for them to sit in the sun/heat.

Now, I am lucky and the previous owner took great care of the truck so I was just trying to get the smell out and did not have any bad stains to deal with.

If you use a carpet cleaning machine on your seats it should take most of the crap out.

I had to rent one once, worked real nice.

I removed the carpet and stapled it to a wooden fence, then pressure washed it.
Even the rust stains around the seat mounts came out.

Seat covers can be removed, but that can be difficult if they used hog rings. Modern stuff usually has those full length of the seam plastic clips. Aside from some velcro, they usually come off pretty easily. Seat bottoms will be a bear, but if the seats are already out, that's what I'd do - staple the seat covers to a fence and pressure wash.

I use Simple Green because I can stand that smell. Crud Cutter (@ Lowes) is better, but I don't want that smell in the interior.

Pressure washer for the carpet, steam cleaner for the seats.

windex, or any other glass cleaner. I have been doing it this way for years.

spray on
rub it in with a brush
wipe off with a damp rag.

i was gonna go the pressure wash route but i knew it would take FOREVER to dry and i want bout to take a chance on wet carpet in my truck....this was the reason i had to replace it. mad back window seal and it ruined my carpet.

i used the stuff at Walmart in a blue can...cant remember the name but the can looks like the air-in-a-can they sale in the computer section. works GREAT

just let the carpet dry out a few days and drive without it

ok I bought a toyota and the owners smoked and used the truck for work so it was nasty inside. I stopped by the detail shop by my house and he told me what to do cheap.
1) buy a bottle of simple green concentrate an mix up a batch of 60 to 1(60 being the simple green)and put it in an spray bottle and fit the hard stains with that and a brush.
2) next mix up some 40 t0 1 in a bucket and scrub the whole seat down with that and the brush.
3) take a clean rag(terry cloth works best)and scrub the wet seats again with the dry rag to see if you have gotten the stains out. if you didn't repeat step two on the stains then move on to step 4
4)vacuum the moisture out of the seats with at least a 5 horse shop vac.
If you don't use a least a 5 horse you probably won't get the moisture all out and your seats can start to mold from the inside and that can make you sick.
the average seat left out to dry will take about 2 weeks in the sun to completely dry all the way through.
also if you have one of those self car wash places in town most of those have vacs that are at least 5 horse so you can take the seats there and dry them.
I was going to do the pressure wash thing on the seats and the guy told me not too as the stitching gets old and you can rip the seats covers apart. and tear the foam inside where the pieces are glued together.
I did what he said to do and the interior came out awesome and it got rid of that smoke smell as well.
last thing if you use the simple green on the rest of the interior to clean it and wipe it down DO NOT USE IT ON ANY WRITING ON THE DASH! it will wipe the writing clean off trust me I know!!!
