Greetings and new here.
Ranger is an 04 Edge, 4.0, Auto trans. 4WD.
A little background, I bought the truck 2 years ago with 90K Miles. It always had a strange unexplainable clunk at take off and just a slight vibration at highway speeds I originally thought was tires but didn't go away after new tires. The tire dealer even replaced all 4 new tires trying to solve the vibration.
Just over a year ago at 110K miles the 1st mile or so (Typically had to be cold) and intermittent chirp, chirp could be heard coming from under the truck. Sounded just like a U-Joint would sound. After some time I replaced the rear drive shaft u-joints with no improvement. Couple weeks ago truck was parked on a hill pointing down hill and a rear pinion seal leak was noticed. So I thought my problems was the rear. I could see no problems or extra movement in the pinon and even had an experience mechanic friend look and agree nothing could be seen bad there. I replaced the rear pinion seal. The one replaced actually did not look bad. 500 miles later its still dry. Last week the chirping seemed to get louder with an additional CRUNCH every now & then. I Pulled the front axle, the front CV joint seemed to bind and the u-joint had just a little wear so I replaced both. So while I waited for the CV joint I drove the truck a couple days without the front drive shaft. Without the front drive shaft the chirping was gone, the vibration I felt since I bought the truck was gone as was the mysterious clunk at take off. I thought my problems would be solved. So yesterday my Drive Shaft CV joint arrived, I assembled everything and installed the rebuilt front drive shaft. Upon my 1st test drive the chirp, chirp, crunch was back. I again removed the front drive shaft and the chirp is again gone. With the shaft removed I could spin the transfer case output shaft and could not feel or hear anything unusual. The chirp is heard in both 4WD & 2WD. I'm leaning more toward the transfer case than the front differential because the noise is from directly under me and not front of the truck.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
