So I was driving today, on my way to work. Had to make a insanely quick stop, cause of some idiots on the road. In the process of trying to slow down. i went to downshift into first. I know not the smartess idea but i needed to stop asap. well i was still going to fast for my low gear. I obviously heard some grinding, and then a crunching sound. I pulled it out of gear and rolled a bit, I swear i heard a crunchying sound. like a peice of metal was falling inbetween the gears. Then nothing. I drove to work. No grinding, slipping out of gear, vibration, or anything. I just took a spin around the parking lot in first gear. accelerating and coasting in and out of first. I dont hear anything. What do you guys think is the likeliness that i chipped first gear? Was the crunching maybe shavings? anyways let me know what you think

May have been. The chip probably just sunk to the bottom of your diff. Take the cover off and take a look. Your probably due for a diff fluid change anyways. Jack the back of the truck up so you can spin the gears around. And if you take the cover off get a can of brake cleaner and spray the heck out of the inside of the pumpkin. That gets it all nice and clean.

why would it be in my diff if i think i might have chipped a tranny gear? wouldnt be sitting at the bottom of the pan?

Ohhh. I thought you meant a gear in your axle. That's quite a project to take the tranny out, just changed the clutch on mine. Maybe try and go up to 20 mph and downshift into first to see what it does

lol yeah i just finished putting a clutch in mine like a month ago. But thats what cause the problem, i was probably doing 15 when i downshifted and grinded the shit out of it. I cant downshift into first going that fast the gear is to short. But if i did chip first, do you think it will be at the bottom of pan? im going to change the fluid tmr, but i dont know how likely the chipped piece will come out anyways..if there is one. I drove it around tho. Doesnt seem like anything is wrong

Oh ok. I thought maybe you were going faster like 30. I don't know how much different your tranny is to mine but if there was something in there it would probably stay in there. All I have is a drain plug. Do you have a pan or something?

yeah, i have a drain plug. right in the center of the tranny pan. im just bummin, cause its a pain in the ass to fix the synchros. i dont want to have to take the tranny out for something so stupid..lol. i just dont know if its messed up. You would think i would know the immediately if it was chipped tho yeah?

You should have a FM146, that has a removable pan. Drain it, pull the pan, and take a look. You can get a good view of the gears with that pan off.
I know, I busted a few teeth off 2nd gear in one of my FM146s. It kept jamming up whenever I tried to move the truck. I was able to drop the pan, grind the rest of the teeth off 2nd, reinstall everything, and drive the truck for a few days until I got a new trans.

Oh ya mine is up on the side a little. I would drain out the fluid and if it doesn't come out get one of those bendy things with the magnet on the end and fish for it. I have no idea if the gears are magnetic though. Worth a shot

alright sounds good. So taking off the pan I should be able to see the gears? Yeah i believe thats the tranny i have. First is not sticking, or making any grinding going in and out of gear, no wierd vibrations or any other sounds.. So maybe i just grinded off some shavings, just happen to sound real bad. But if it is chipped. Is it worth trying to fix the specific gear or is it better to just buy a new tranny? and what do those usually run?

I would drop the pan, check everything out, if it looks ok, button it up and drive it. If it blows up down the road, swap in an m5od.

kk, im hoping it doesnt blow up lol. what would cause it to do that? just the missing teeth? what tranny is the m5od? and will it mount up with my 2.9l and my transfer case? how much do they cost?

I wouldnt start worrying about a new trans yet. Wait till you know whats going on inside yours.
