:stirthepot: Sorry, I can't help myself, but I'd really like some honest opinions about the Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4, with a V6. I know, I know, wrong friggin' website, but I can't help my wandering eye...

well I gotta say as a DD I love my chevy its a 04 with the 5.3 makes around 19mpg to and fro and about 14 pulling the ranger to play.... beats the hell outta my 01 f-150 5.4 spent 4 grand on having the trans rebuilt twice and the best I could ever do was like 16mpg to and fro and about 10 pulling the ranger

Only thing I can say is the ford handled weight better the the chevy but they aways have I lost interest in fords gas engines when they when to the mod. I loved my 95 150 with the 351 pulling machine there !

no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no:bad::bad::bad::bad::bad::bad::bad::bad:
ok now thats out of my system...my friends dad had the SAME TRUCK your talking about. its WAY underpowered the body and frame are too heavy for that puny v-6 motor
my Ranger spanks it on the street and on the trail
and mine is the 3.slow
stay clear of this truck i know first hand

and i am on Fords side all the way I hate Chevy...always have ....always will there is no changing my mind. So my opinion might be just a little one sided..
just my two cents

I was just lookin' at the Chevy website, brand new nicely equiped, aprox. $20,000. hmm, prolly gotta keep the Ranger a few more years. there's jus' somethin' about a reg.-cab, short-bed, Chevy full-size, that I like.

Hahaha!!! Way to go, Bob! I would agree with the above posters, those trucks are HORRIFICALLY underpowered with a V6 and won't get squat for mileage because you will be working it to death. If you have to sink into the dirty side, at least get the V8. Still a POS but you won't hate it as much.

I like their interior, don't really care too much for the looks of the Chevy, but if I bought a new truck based on looks GMC would probably be the first stop followed by Ford. One thing I don't like about them (Ford is the same though) is the bulky look of the bed, makes them look fat.

IMO, V-6's have no purpose in half ton truck, which is probably why Ford no longer offers one. They are too busy fighting for their lives to keep the hulk moving to get much if any better milage over a V-8. I don't know about Chevy, but according to the ratings the 4.2, 4.6 and 5.4 lost 1 mpg for every step to a bigger engine... 2 mpg between the 4.2 and 5.4, is it really worth it? Mine gets better than they said it would anyway.

At least go with the 4.8 if not bigger... I would go used as well, it is a truck buyers market if there ever was one.

I have not been around the new 5.3, but I have towed a fair bit with a '99 5.3. There is a key factor that I don't have one. I like my 5.4, and with 3.31 gears and 255/70-16 tires (slightly oversize) I get 17-18 mpg on road trips.

thanks all, alot of good info. one thing I'd like to add though, about the 5.4L: I drive an '01, E-350, 8-pass. van at work, and I get less than 10 mpg's with it, granted we push 'er hard, heavy loads, oh yeah and it's got mud tires. I wonder how the 5.4L is front of a manual, say in an F-250...

as another side note, I was hopeing GM still had manual's for the 4.3, no dice, at least not with the 4x4. So if I'm stuck buying a used 4x4 with an auto, and a 6-cyl., I'm thinking Explorer. :icon_cheers:

That one ton van is much heavier (and more aerodynamically ugly) than a pickup, the mud tires are not helping either.

My first thought was, "Underpowered" Though that is the only regular cab, short box full-size currently offered with a standard trans. But that doesn't matter much when you gotta settle with the 4.3.

The 4.3 isn't a bad motor for the S-10 but ya it's not good in a fullsize. My uncle has a 2002 Silverado 1500 with the Vortec 5.7 and it's really a good truck. Rides like a Caddy, handles like a street truck, gets better mileage than a lot of V-6s and can haul stuff all day long. They are more expensive though but you get what you pay for.

That would be the 5.3 in 2002, 1998 was the last year for the 5.7 in the 1500's.
