thanks all, alot of good info. one thing I'd like to add though, about the 5.4L: I drive an '01, E-350, 8-pass. van at work, and I get less than 10 mpg's with it, granted we push 'er hard, heavy loads, oh yeah and it's got mud tires. I wonder how the 5.4L is front of a manual, say in an F-250...
as another side not, I was hopeing GM still had manual's for the 4.3, no dice, at least not with the 4x4. So if I'm stuck buying a used 4x4 with an auto, and a 6-cyl., I'm thinking Explorer.![]()
The 4.3 isn't a bad motor for the S-10 but ya it's not good in a fullsize. My uncle has a 2002 Silverado 1500 with the Vortec 5.7 and it's really a good truck. Rides like a Caddy, handles like a street truck, gets better mileage than a lot of V-6s and can haul stuff all day long. They are more expensive though but you get what you pay for.
That would be the 5.3 in 2002, 1998 was the last year for the 5.7 in the 1500's.
