I have a 97 ranger 3.0L 4x4 with long bed. I was driving down the road when truck slipped out of gear. the only thing i could do was put it 4low to move it. Before moving i tried to put it back into 2wd but would not move. I had clutch down brake depressed and in neutral. Please help me determine if transfer case is bad.

Before much other trouble shooting of the tcase can be done, the shifting needs to be sorted out.

While you are correct, it is possible that the shift motor is causing the problems. It is also much easier to check out the shift motor than to tear apart the case to inspect the planetary gears.

I wouldn't have suggested tearing into the transfercase either. Really, if they aren't run dry, how often do they fail? I have enough 1350M's, 1350E's, and 1354E's to make a decent size retaining wall. The 1354M's however, will serve a much more useful purpose...........

And when they do fail, it's often a chain that breaks or stretches, or an input bearing.

I would remove the shift motor and shift the case manually, then do some driving around. If everything works well you know the motor or e-shift system is the problem.

Yes you can remove the electronic shift motor and shift it manually by turning the triangular shaft.

is there any chance my shifter could have broke leaving it in 4Low????
