Checking Gears

Is it possible to check what gears are in an axle if someone put a different set in? there's a guy selling his axle and he says he put 5.13's in it, I just want to make sure I'm not getting gypped.

Count how many times the input rotates to make the tires make 1 complete revolution. When you are done, that's your gear ratio.

most gear sets have the numbers stamped into the ring gear, but if the cover is on the diff then you cant tell by that method. the rotation trick also works well to give you a good idea of the range its in.

or pull the cover off and count the teeth. ring gear teeth divided by pinion teeth is the gear ratio.

I know this may sound weird. But I got one of those rare earth magnets you get out of computer hard drive. and Glued a piece of string(about 3 foot long) to it. I stick it to the drive shaft of a truck I and interested in. I mark the tire at the ground then roll back or forward where the tire makes one full turn. I then get under there and count how many times the string has wrapped around the drive shaft. 4 and a little more is 4.10, almost 4 is 3.73, just over 3 is 3.08, 4 and a half is 4.56 and so on.

An easy way i do it is find a weight on the drive shaft and use that as your refrence mark for rotation and a valve steam on a tire for one complete rotation.
