I don't know too much about this stuff, but did that guy say he put gear lub in his crankcase??

His biggest investment should be in a Haynes manual. And a GED.

That's pretty bad, although not asamusing as the guy who sucked a bag of sand into his engine awhile back. Pretty funny what people do to their cars. Try working in a wrecking yard if you want to see many creative ways to ruin a vehicle.

Actually, 75W-90 isn't THAT much more viscous than crankcase oil. It's just about equivalent to 10W-30. The gear oil and crankcase oil SAE viscosity charts are different.

However, the additive package is STUPID. Differentials don't see combustion products, or anywhere near the same amount of heat. A crankcase is a distinctly unfriendly place, much more so than a differential or manual transmission.

Those guys really recommend GL-5 gear oil for transmissions? Oops. Differential oils need to be slippery because hypoid gears always require sliding motions. Transmission oils less so. That's what GL-4 is for....

And Red Line does sell GL-4 oils (particularly MTL and MT-90).

its another case of someone working on thier car with out knowing what they were doing. wow. and i am pretty sure that the guy that tried to port his intake with sand was BS.

The only vehicle that guy should be only be allowed to operate -by law- is a bicycle with handlebar streamers and a little bell. What a waste.
Uncommon Sense.:bad:

I almost did this once... :)

My sister's b/f told her to get some Lucas for an oil change (which I did) and some 10W-30. Not my car, I won't argue.

Got the new filter on, went to put the Lucas in, went to pour it in, then I caught a smell of gear oil. She picked up the wrong stuff. Ironically, the Autozone puts he gear oil next to the oil and the oil stablizer elsewhere on the shelf. That could have gone bad real quick, luckily I caught it before any of that syrup got in there... I really should have checked the label. Man, he should have known something was wrong just by the smell of that crap.

i used to work at a Valvoline oil change place. we got this customer who would always come in every month, but ALWAYS gripe that we messed up his car in one way or another--everythime he came in he would verbally abuse all of us. so one day, he came in and we all had enough. we took a quart of each: 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40, 20W-50, And atf. after the filter ws back on, in went this oil soup. we figured if he was gonna bitch, we would give him a reason. (I was 17 at the time, please forgive my lack of respect!)
he came back in a month later, and this time smiling ear to ear. said after the oil change, his car ran better than it ever had before, and gave us all a $5 tip. when he left, we looked at each other in wonder and then laughed till it hurt.

And that is why I rarely let anyone else change my oil. And when I do, I watch like a MFing bird of prey.:nono:

There is no conservation of stupidity in the universe.

And Gear oils and engine oils aren't measured on the same scale.

And in point of fact 75w-90 gear oil measures much more
like 10w-40 (or 15w40) than anything else.

The big difference is that gear oil is a "filming" oil
and motor oil is specifically formulated to NOT film
as well as usually having anti-foaming additives added to it

Take two pieces of rusty steel in oil, one in gear oil and the other in crank case oil and hang them on a nail on the wall of you garage.

the piece dipped in engine oil will appear dry to the touch in a couple of weeks.
the piece dipped in gear oil will still feel (and appear) oily
for years.

Gear oil is specifically formulated to "Stick" to things.
If engine oil sticks to metal it makes it nearly impossible
for the oil ring to scrape it from the cylinder walls.

And actually this now brought back a very long repressed memory- About 30 years ago when I was young and dumb, I added a quart of oil to my Mustang ONLY to notice too late it was ATF- but at least I was smart enuff to change it right away- I didnt go out "redlining" people.........

I would take my truck to the dealer for a oil change, than to trust a jockey at the local quick lube, I like people to change my oil, that actually CARES about the customer!
