I bought a 2003 Ford Ranger a couple weeks ago. Yesterday driving down the road, the "check fuel cap" light came on. When I got where I was going, I took the cap off and put it back on, the light stayed on. Could the cap have just messed up going down the road, or could it actually be something else. The truck runs great. It doesn't sound like a serious problem but I want to be sure its not.

Mine came on not to long ago because I let my dad borrow my truck and when he filled it up with gas, he didn't install it right and it came on, so I took it off and reinstalled it. After a couple miles of driving, it went off. So try driving it a little bit more and it should go off.

Gas cap could be bad and if so, it may not be providing enough pressure in the tank.

check the rubber seal on the "buisness end" of the cap and make sure it isnt torn or dry rotted. if it isnt, install the cap until it clicks and drive for a few days. if it still doesnt go out, either the cap is bad in some not-obvious manor or you have an emissions leak somewhere else.

FYI, you wont hurt anything by driving with this light on. its just an emissions thing.

thanks guys. Good to know its nothing serious that I have to fix right now.
