My check engine light came on, the other night. So I took it over to AAMCO and got a free scan, the guy told me a few codes popped up but in short that the engine is running too lean, and that its an emissions problem. Could be O2 sensor, or timing etc. While I definitely do not want to pay them $150+ for the diagnostic and whatever the cost to replace the part(s) are, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?

Just flippin through my chilton manual the IAC struck my attention, but I am not sure at all what it could be.

get the exact codes from them and post them here. Then we can properly diagnose it.

An IAC is not the only thing that can cause a lean condition. We need more detail on the codes.
Go to your local Autozoo or similar and get your computer scaned for free. Than get the codes to us. The "gearheads" at TRS. We'll be more than willing to piss Testosterone on each other just to help.

Im in CA, they don't offer the loaner scan to us anymore >.<

Took it to a local mechanic, checked it for free and showed us the scanner. P0171 and P0174 came up and that is it.

fixed. the PCV hose was all shredded up, dont know how that happened!

verry common on fords!

Newbie here: thanks for the good help / education. Had a miss at idle under load, sometimes it would die at stoplights. Put in new plugs, cleaned MAF, cleaned IAC, no help.

Finally took 4.0 SOHC cover off, had hole in the PCV tube rubber elbow, kinda shredded looking. Ford dealer only sold plastic tube with elbows on each end, was fourty bucks. That fixed it, it's idling like new again.:yahoo:
