Went to have my truck smogged today and it passed except for the check engine light not working.

Pulling the instrument panel apart put in new bulb. still not working.

The check engine light has never worked since i bought the truck 3 years ago and the state smog people have now added to the test that the light must work.
Checked the wiring diagram and can not find the bulb or where it connects to the ECA
My code reader port does work so i do have a signal to the self test connector and can read the TC with my code reader.

Need a point i can test the check engine light circuit back on the ECA so that i can start looking for a bad wire or to run a jumper to the light on the panel.

I know the 88 2.9l does not have a "check engine" light circuit, despite having a lamp for it in the dash. If I remember correctly, the 2.3l is the same way. The lamp is in the dash for use with the 2.0 engine. The state people may have no idea what they're looking for on your truck.

The '88 528e has a 4 function check engine light. So all '88 E28s have a check engine wired into the dash. Except the 535 's ECU didn't support a check engine. Maybe it is a spec that came in in '88 :icon_confused:
