I was wondering how to check the timing on the 2.9 engine and also how to reset it if needed

Get the engine up to temp unplug the spout wire and with a timing light check the timing. To adjust it you need to turn the distributor by loosening the hold down bolt just enough to turn it with little effort. Tighten the dizzy and check it again once you have it correct plug the spout back in. That is of course you have the TFI ignition in your truck.

the timing spec should be on the sticker on the radiator core support.

The spout connector on my 90 Bronco II 2.9 is on the side of a thick wire harness that runs front to back beside the passenger side of the engine. It's near the heater box.

The distributor hold down bolt is behind the distributor on the back of the engine, and is impossible to see so you'll have to find it by feel. It's a 1/2" head on the bolt and the best way to get to it that I've found is standing on the drivers side of the car. If you're not real tall you might need something to stand on.

If you find that the bolt is seized and you find a way to get it loose despite the space limitations destroying any ability to put decent leverage on the wrench...let me know. My timing is 2 degrees retarded off the setting.

thank you

I have been searching for the hold down bolt on the dizzy. I searched for days...lol. I kknow this has nothing to do with this thread but had to say thanks. lol. Sorry hope I did not jack this guys thread.

BTW I de-pinned the spout wire at the dizzy when I was trying to set my timing. My timing with the spout wire in is at about 18BTDC when I pulled the spout wire it was at about 14 BTDC. I will adjust my timing this morning now that I might be able to find the bolt....lol.I hope this will cure my slightly rough idle when sitting at a light.

Did you clean the damper marks good and put a white or yellow mark on 10 btdc. The best way to do it is from underneath have someone click the ignition till you see the marks and when your timing use the pointer not the round thing There should be more than 4 degrees difference. get it set at 10 with the spout disconnected and let us know how it works.
