Cheap tranny swap

Is it possible to make a 2 wheel drive 1990 a4ld work in a 1990 4x4 if I just swapped the tail housings and tail shafts? They are both the same year from behind the same sized engine. I figured I could save a little money and have my 4x4 again.

if you change the output shaft yes it will work
