I have a 2.3L XLT and I'd like to change the gear ratio to 4.10

Where's the cheapest place to get this done? I already got a quote from 4wheelparts for about 600.. is that about right, or should I look somewhere else?

Also, I am going to be putting 31" tires on, with a 3" spindle lift. Is 4.10 a good ratio to use?

Thanks

Where you located? I had a guy rebuild my rear end in Ontario, CA. All he does is differential work, So he's good. Performance Differential 909-923-7707Its been like 4 years but I remember his pricing was really good. He's back in a business park off of Grove and the 60. After 4 years and many miles, a lot of offroad and driving like a mad man, I haven't had any problems with my gears I'm at like 72000 sumthin now. This guy actually built it 7 months after the dealership did it under warranty (my last warranty job I had like 35981 miles) I took it back to them after it started whining and they basically said tuff luck :taunt: and quoted me some outrageous price :icon_surprised: to have it done through them again. So I found the guy in Ontario, glad I did, much less and no problems at all. Well hope this helps, if you are even near Ontario at all. I just saw 4 wheel parts and know they are a local chain, not sure where else they might be. Well good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks! I'll definitely give him a call and let you know how it works out. I'm actually not too far from Ontario

if you want to you could actually do it your self it will cost about 150 for the gears if you have basic mechanical skills i think you have to buy an install tool to but not sure how much it is

how hard is it, do you know?

I considered doing that.. the gear and pinion set is about 200 and then I'd have to buy an install kit for like 100. So it'd be half the price..

has anyone ever done it before?

4.56 would be a better ratio for the 4cyl engine with 31s.

Setting up your own gears takes a number of special tools and knowledge (not to mention patience, it's a trial & error process using different thickness shims that you will very likely NOT get right on your first try).

I would have a shop do it if this is your only vehicle to drive.

If you think you want to try though, there should be some posts back a ways that have some details on it if you search for "gear setup"

Hope that helps

Agree with junkie, 4.56's would be the better choice.

If you are going to go through all the trouble and expense of installing 4.10's, why not just go 4.56's?

if you want 4.10's, i would go junkyard hunting for 4.10 geared axles. you can swap those in on your own....

anouther vote for 4.56's if your going to have a axle regeared....

Oh...yes....you can find 4.10's in 7.5's and 8.8's already.

thanks for all the help!

would I have to be worried about overreving on the freeway with 4.56's? I forgot to mention that it's a 5 speed, manual drive.

no, the 4.56s would put you at the perfect RPMs with 31s to get the best power AND gas mileage with the 2.3L
