i bought a fuel filter cuz i just installed my new motor in my 91 ford ranger 4.0 4x4 super cab i found the old fuel filter but ive read posts on here about a fuel inertia switch and crank the motor for 20 seconds, i was wondering if there was an easier way of doing this like maybe pinching the fuel lines? i haven't checked out the lines to c if its just rubber hose but would it work? i would crank the engine like said before but last time i did that my neighbors all looked out the window and a dude came out with a shotgun... its a small town

i pulled the fuel pump relay under the hood, started it it ran for 30 seconds till it was outta gas. then changed the filter

how much easier do you want? :dunno:

I never even bother doing that at work, just disconnect the filter and change. You will need a disconnect tool for the fittings at the filter.

so your neighbour came out with a shotgun because you went to crank your truck over?

but you managed to do a motor swap without having a neighbour come out with a shotgun?

its pretty easy to change you just pull the plug on the inertia switch

i used to do the same till i got fuel sprayed in my face:icon_twisted:

no i was doing something on a friends truck and started it a few times and he got all mad and came out waving his gun around. and i managed to do the motor swap cuz i threatend to drive the truck thru his living room, so we settled our disagreements i guess. and i need a tool to swap fuel filters?

:icon_confused: what started all that? why would someone get mad over starting a truck....unless it was open headers at 12am
ive never got someone wave a gun around but i almost got a bat to the back of my head. the guy my friend is renting a shop from didnt know who i was....

it was noon or so that day and the dude was just an ass. i wasnt being loud his motorhome was just parked at the back of my garage on the neighbors lawn. so ne sound i made he heard

I've never done that replacing fuel filters either. Just release the fuel pressure at the schrader valve and replace the filter.

oh. my buddy has a neighbor like that. complains bout everything he does in his yard.

to refill the fillter before engine start all you need to do is cycle the key from off to on several times

You'll hear the change in pitch from the sound of the pump when it's pushed the
air out of the filter, up to the fuel rail and back down the return line to the tank.

Maybe ive had too many beers but what is the question here? How to change a fuel filter???

Let it sit for awhile, they don't hold the high pressure very well. Notice that when you turn your key on without starting your truck your fuel pump kicks on for a couple seconds to represurize your system. I let my F-150 sit over lunch when I did mine, no pressure whatsoever.

I've never done that replacing fuel filters either. Just release the fuel pressure at the schrader valve and replace the filter.

If you do that make sure to clean it up, over on F150online someone burned their truck up after changing the fuel filter because they left a puddle of gas on top of the engine. It is a no brainer for most, but evidently not everybody.

I use a small screw driver or a pen with a rag over it to soak up the fuel that comes out. Good point though.
