`1989 xlt 4x4 2.9 auto.Put in a new battery now it sometimes dies at stop sign red lights etc and sometimes while driving down the road, also when I put in reverse to back into driveway it go dead then also. Each time it starts up without hesitation. This was not happening until the battery change.Need advice please. Thanks

Hows it dying, sounds like maybe need to turn up idle.

I had a Ford Probe that did this anytime you disconnected the battery. It would take almost 2 weeks, if not longer, for it to relearn it's idle. Give it some time and take a little bit of extra care at stops. If the battery is the only thing you did, then you know it must be the problem...in one way or another.
Is there anything you could of knocked loose in the area? Thinking of my truck, there are some lines for the EGR, starter solenoid and a wiring harness. All pretty solid stuff that's not easily goofed up...Still, I'd have a look around in that area.

there is no idle adjustment on the 2.9, that screw is for the tps baseline adjustment, idle is controlled by the computer

I Have reset the computer twice and went through the idle relearn process twice it might be alittle better, but still dies some times at stops and when i back up.

Maybe run the codes and see if a sensor needs to be changed or cleaned then if you clean/change a sensor disconnect the battery again to reset the computer run it for 20 minutes at medium speed and retest it till you get 11s but always run the code reader after the engine is fully warm.

Update

Changed the TPS and so far all is well again. I will keep yall posted if any changes. Thanks for all the replies.

My mechanic buddy spent about 2 hours messing with it, so He decided it was the TPS and had a used one so he put it on and so far it's okay. So just the SWAG system (lol)
