Need some serious help on this. I have a chance to buy a 1997 4.0 with harness and computer. Can I put it in my gen 1 and use the obd2?

Shouldn't be that hard. You will have to spice some stuff, gonna need a 97 dash harness too. The worst part is going to be your auto-tragic transmission. This would be the appropriate time to swap a manual trans or upgrade to a 4R44.
The biggest thing in your favor is that 97 didn't have PATS so the PCM doesn't need to talk to the instrument cluster to get the show (or the truck) started.
If the engine is good, I'd do it. Absolute worst case scenario is that you buy it, spend a few more dollars, and have a 4.0 with OBDI.
