Can you guys with 94-97 rangers show me some pics of where you mounted your CBs? I'm droppin one in here in the next day or two and realized that space to screw into under the dash is pretty limited. Any and all pics/advice would be great! :icon_thumby:

I've seen where people chuck the ashtray and mount the cb in it's place. You've got 12v right there to boot. No pictures though.

'93's have the same dash, so heres mine:

the maxon has since been replaced with a mid-range cobra model, but the same mounting style was used. notice no bracket and no ugly gap between the dash and the CB :yahoo:

For what it's worth, I'll throw mine out here:

However I suspect being he has a '96, he's looking for anything mounted under the '95-current dash (IIRC, the airbag cutoff switch 1996-up gets in the way of under-ashtray mounting of CBs and such).

Thanks guys, that helps. Someone mentoned that I can lose the ash tray and use that 12v power? I don't know that my radio will fit. It's a Cobra 148 GTL early 90's model. If it does, how hard is the ashtray to remove? Oh Sludge, how'd you do that with no bracket? Thaks again and keep them pics comin!

the ash tray is only held in with 2 bolts. pull it out, and the bolts are exposed on either side of the tray. undo those bolts and the tray comes out of the dash.

my bracketless mounting is done by removing the top half of the CB's case, drilling holes in it and screwing it to the dash (a strip of electrical tape over the heads assurs they wont short anything out if the CB is bumped or jarred). then the CB is put back together.

ok, thanks. My radio is about 9 or so inches wide. Will that fit in the ashtray slot or not?

oh, also, whats a good ground spot under the dash for the radio ground, and what fuse are you pullin power from in the dash?

i grounded mine to a metal brace behind the dash. its in the middle, down low. mines a '93 so yours might be different.

power was spliced from the cig. lighter.

Mines grounded to the lower bolt on the steering column brace.
I ran a separate #12 wire with inline fuse from the battery for power.

CBs tend to draw a fair amount of power, I'd give it it's own circuit rather than tap off the fusebox.

OK, thanks for all the input guys. I got it all hooked up tonight. i used the #17 15a fuse for the cig.plug and got a bracket to mount it. the pictures and such helped a lot. Thanks again!
