So, I had something interesting happen to me just two weeks ago, that I can't quite figure out.
I had just gotten home from driving for work round midnight, and not 'bout 10 minutes I decide to go to the store (so engine was still at op. temp.). It's 14 miles round trip to the store that I went to, 90% freeway.
I was in the store for about 20, maybe 30 minutes max. Starts just fine, put it in gear and start moving and it sounds like there's ice on the friction disc (I didn't doubt this because it's been in the teens to 20's at night) I thought it a little odd cause it was at op temp when I went in, shouldn't have frozen that quickly certainly not with how hot my tranny runs...but figured eh, it's just ice, it'll burn off.
I hopped the freeway and then when I was getting off the freeway I went to downshift an found it hard to pull out of gear...ripped it out of gear and couldn't put it back into gear, then quickly realized that my clutch had lost all but 3-4 inches of pressure.
I short-shifted it the rest of the way home and went to check everything to see what was wrong.....this is where the weird part comes in....even though I had practically no pressure in my peddle I had not lost ANY fluid... the reservoir was still full, there were no breaks in the line, anywhere, the master cylinder wasn't leaking.....the most I could go off of was the bottom of the transmission was wet but I also have a slowly deteriorating oil pan gasket, and like I said, I hadn't lost any fluid....
I came to the conclusion my slave had given out on me, and it was time to replace the flywheel and friction disc anyway so I got a clutch kit and a new slave cyl.+release bearing.
my pilot bearing was horribly shot and I had a hell of a time getting it out. And now I've got everything back together and am down to bleeding the clutch-line, and I can't get full pressure to return to the peddle. I lack a partner, and I have yet to pull the line and bench-bleed which I think I'll try tomorrow.
Any guesses on what actually happened? cause I'm clueless. I've never heard of lost pressure without lost fluid before.
