Cats or no Cats?

it sounds like hes a ricer kid.....u know if u gut ur interior ull gain 2 seconds on ur 1/4mi time:icon_twisted:

Or maybe he's just hearing power? It's a common thing for someone to confuse power with sound.

hmmmm, maybe he should jsut run a straight header, thatll give him like 400hp cause of how loud it is

Oh god if only that was true.. I never would have let my father Junk his dodge that you could hear roaring down the road a mile away :D

HAHAHA!

Does that mean my Exploder gained 200 HP when the muffler fell off? It was louder than heck. Seemed to drive pretty much the same, though....

depending on how many cats you have, i suggest if you have two, cut one. or if you have four, cut two.
you will keep back pressure but free up ressitance

Plus your truck was lighter. So the real gain was even more due to your improved power-to-weight ratio.

ok, this might be running this into the ground but also the whole reason for cats should be considered. Back before all the ecm's went into cars starting in the mid-late 70's most power/performance cars made tons of toxins and harmful emissions. All the treehuggers in the nation got pissed about this and sodomized the government into controlling the emissions in cars and trucks. Of course the thing sacrificed in this was power, admitting however car companies were new at this. The cat was initially designed to lower co2 emissions, and therefore is included in the power-inhibbiting ecm's. So, if you were to remove the cat back then sure MAYBE there COULD have been a POSSIBLE power gain. However, nowadays car companies, insurance companies, and the federal government have gotten a lot smarter by improving the lag factor on horsepower with these ecm's, and really nowadays it doesn't do all that much if you remove it. Actually I know of several cases when removing and/or gutting the cat inhibits power. After all, why would it be a problem when your cat broke? The reason this happens now is because engineers and designers have designed and specially tuned the cat to be a considerable less of a factor in the dampening of horsepower.

Second of all, this whole backdraft bs.
What happens when you decrease the diameter size of the exhaust pipe from the block out?? POWER GOES OUT THE WINDOW
What happens when you increase the diameter size of the exhaust pipe from the block out? POWER GOES OUT THE WINDOW
Both of these cause considerable backdraft due to the abnormal flow in the exhaust. Going back to the modern day engineering, when was the last time you saw or even heard of a Ford Ranger running a 14.7:1 compression ratio?? I mean seriously, the only people I know who run that kinda power meet on every sunday with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards and the like. Civilian car companies have these cars that are used in every day life programmed and engineered to run with all of these units in harmony, including the running of a lower compression ratio. Removing and/or damaging even one of these units (in context, THE CAT) will cause an unbalancing in the harmony, causing an inhibition of power and drivability.

On top of all of this, what really else needs to be said then the fine you will get when the cop pulls you over and hands you a ticket for disturbing the peace and slapping you with a big ole FEDERAL fine for not having your catalytic converter??

Take it to heart, just cuz a few do it doesn't mean your not gonna get caught. Its all about common sense, you don't need lab reports or school books.

I never noticed any difference between running a cat or no cat, sound, IMHO, was better without a cat. For shits and giggles, last friday before I pulled my 2.9 out, I removed my exhaust so there was only a 1 foot of 2 1/2" pipe after the y-pipe and took it for a short drive, there was deffinatly a difference in low end torque and jesus christ, I'm telling you that 2.9 was louder than my buddies old 460 with the same exhaust (y-pipe with 1 foot of pipe).

My buddy never felt a difference when his arm broke clean in half..
My aunt never felt a difference when her tire blew out..
My uncle never felt a difference when he lost 12lbs off his 350lb body..

My point is, as a human being, just because you didn't "feel" it, doesn't mean nothing happened.

Point is, if I don't feel it, why should I care? With a muffler, cat vs no cat there is no noticable difference I've ever felt whether it be a positive or negative difference, I DID feel a difference with no cat and no muffler, noticablly less low end torque. I'm not saying to remove it, simply saying I never felt a difference either way.
Best millage my rig ever got was 23 MPG with a gutted cat (which I didn't notice any difference either except it sounded like shit) so it's not like it effects gas milage either.

great for you. I was stressing the great majority's dilemma with removing the cat. also, and I'm no tree hugger, but not to mention the great strain on the environment with the toxic waste produced by the tonage.
