Cats or no Cats?

Every time I see the term "back pressure" used particularly the way it is used
here I have to fight an almost irrestable urge to run outside to my truck drive to the house of the person using the term and BITCH SLAP them so hard their Great, great, grandparents will scream in pain from the comfort of their graves.

Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD.

the bullshit about insufficient backpressure causing a lean condition is BULLSHIT, ALL systems adapt

Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD

What a certain ammount of flow restriction does is maintains exhaust flow velocity which inhibits exhaust flow REVERSION FLOW.
(which can be the exhaust flow "pulses" stopping in the pipe to be butt-slammed by the next pulse. having this happen robbs torque at low rpm.
but is a non-issue at higher rpm.

Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD

The 2.9 engine is particularly prone to this happening.
The catalytic cnverter being "hollowed" makes it FAR worse.

Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD

Sizing the pipes correctly to inhibit reversion flow is NOT "Back pressure"

"back pressure" is making the pipes too small PERIOD

Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD.

Modern catylitic converters (monolith style) flow so well that a "cheap"
"knock the innards out of it" hillbilly "improvement" WILL make things worse.

Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD.

That all being said removing the catalytic converter is illegal in most jurisdictions, and doesn't gain you anything.

Infact it might lose you something... Someone mentioned that heat provides exhaust energy, but they got it backwards.
Catylitic converters don't remove heat from the exhaust
they add to it. a catylitic converter actually discharges the gasses HOTTER than when they enter it.

Without a cat the exhaust cools faster (reducing pressure)
but allowing condensation, the rub is that as the condensation (water) takes liquid form it also takes oxides of nitrogen and sulfur
from the ehaust forming dilute acid which speeds the internal corrosion of your pipes and muffler relative to the way they'd corrode with a converter in place.

Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD

You forgot to mention that "backpressue is bad, PERIOD." :D shady

Thank you for pointing that out, edited to rectify that omission.

And in case I forget to mention it, Backpressure is "bad" PERIOD:annoyed:

ha yall funny

**** cats my ranger has straight 2.5 piping and all i got to say is u guys that say i lost power well kiss my ass. I live in buffalo and bring youre 4.0 s all day my 2.3 will without a dought smoke youre restricted exhuast butts all day long

;missingteeth; You're a funny guy, I never saw any difference with any cat, no cat or hollow cat I ran, other than sound. Prove it, go down and pay to use a dyno or shut the **** up. A 4.0 with 17 cats will eat your catless 2.3 for breakfast.

+1 to what mchughes and hahnsb2 said. I'm also glad you live very far away from me so I don't have to breathe your filthy, uncatalyzed exhaust. **** you for not having consideration for other people and the environment we ALL live in. :flipoff:

blah blah

tell that to the peolple running at youre local drag strips. and by the way for youre ignorant views i have picked up power at low rpms and have not lost fuel economy. Oh yea yeah if i was drudging up a old thread then why do u give a shit. i almost for got my buddy has a 5 spd blazer extreme and if u can shift with any skill my 2.3 will stay with it till 4th gear. But obviously the extra 2 liters will get but thats how much extra torque i got .My bad i didnt think u all were so conservative with youre ideas and extra power gains.

Like I said before, go down and do some dyno runs or shut the **** up!

I have a 2.3 ranger, and my 3.0 that I drive now. My 3.0 would whoop the hell out of my 2.3, and a 4.0 will pull on my in 3rd gear. Whoever thinks a stock 2.3 would beat a 4.0 is out of their mind.

Now, your cats are there for a reason. You may notice EXTREMELY minimal gains, probably none, by deleting or gutting the cats. So what's the big deal? Just leave them alone. And if you do do anything to them, it usually makes the vehicle sound like complete shit. Point being, just leave them.

To the post above mine talking about race cars on a drag strip...you made your point right there. DRAG STRIP. Not daily driving 100 miles a day. Maybe a few 1320's and that's it. You typically dont drive your drag car to work and back which maybe a mile or 100 miles. The 1320 and daily driving are two totally different things. Leave the damn cats alone and help the world out a bit man.

Most drag cars are set up for optimum power, all but spitting raw fuel out the pipe at idle, that will kill a catylitic converter in short order.

Modern cats have about the same resistance as a typical glasspack, whoopie.:c-n:

I had a 2000 GMC pick up with an all aluminum 6.0L i pulled the cats and got O2 trickers and i gained in the top end. i had it dyno'd at my buddys shop and i gained an average of 5hp over 3 runs. i did however notice a difference in my low end torque.after all the mods were done it was running 387hp at the wheels, i would say its worth removing them if u want to race and need that little extra boost of power but otherwise keep them on, they scrub out alot of harmful emmisions.

so what, i used to smoke all the most bad ass cars in my 85 dodge omni that HAD cats, i ran a 11.35 in the 1/4 mi in a dodge omni, and a s10 extreme aint nothin special, its just a looks package, and rangers were always faster then them anyways, stock for stock a ranger gt will spank a s10 extreme

Totally agree with Hahns. Prove it, or just shut up. I could take a case of beer out of my truck and claim I felt a gain in power because it's lighter now, but who's really going to believe that I could feel that? I'd be trying to speak pure BULLSHIT, just like you.
