Hey gang,

Got a question for you:

I have a 99 Ranger, 4.0L, Auto. I have 4 Catalytic Converters between the exhaust manifolds and the muffler.

My question is...

Have any of you heard of replacing the cat's with regular tubing to gain fuel mileage? Then, re-installing when smogging the truck?

Thank you for your help.

this thread will be locked in 3....2....1.....

but anyways, talking about that isnt allowed on this website, its against the law to remove your cats (even though i have never kept one on a vehicle and 4.0s sound particularly sweet with no cats and glasspacks or super 40s fyi)

so this thread wont last long...

Thank you for this information. I appreciate the heads up!

removing functioning cats on a untuned 4.0 will decrease fuel economy.

tune could mean programming to eliminate o2 use(decreases fuel economy and increases power potential with that type of tune)

or tune the pcm tighter and relocate the 02's so they will run hotter.

Umm, I'm pretty sure Ford didn't spend a few million dollars adding 3 extra cats just because they felt like spending the money. There's a reason for having 4 cats.

And this whole thread wouldn't exist if people would just bother reading the sticky threads at the top of the forums....

Your truck is OBDII and has a catalyst efficiency monitor (oxygen sensor) after the cats. Without the cats there it ain't gonna run right.

wells, im running true duals at moment. had it done bout couple months ago. i also got a o2 sensor simulator from JEGS online. works like a charm and engine runs perfect. but ive gained MPG only like 5mpg though... yes its loud as hell but i love it. i lost a little bit of get up in go in 1st and 2nd. bout when i pound it in 3rd and then 4th. ive gained top end in both gears.

P.S. i havent even flouded a value yet... also, if you do decide to run with no cats. just spend like 35 bucks on jegs and get a simulator. itll help out cause itll basically send a false signal to computer saying its running perfect or enough to get it by. works for me. just watch getting pulled over or emissions. you can get a Big ticket or even jail i believe sense its federal offense
