The flange between the cat and the rest of my exhaust system rotted out. Should I weld a new flange in there or should I just weld in a piece of pipe between them? What about those woven flex pipes?

The flange connection makes it easier to remove the rest of the system during maintenance or replacement. I'd say it's your call.

I doubt it will ever be removed for maintenance and if I end up replacing the muffler I'll just take my recip to the whole thing. I just didn't know if making it into one rigid piece was going to cause cracks or breaks somewhere.

I did put a short piece of flex in my system. But I put it right after the flange at the engine. My thoughts on that was to isolate the exhaust from physical engine vibrations. I am not an exhaust engineer though.
