Hey, lately I've been getting a pretty decent amount of vibrations, and I figured u joins, but when I tested for it, I found the carrier bearing had a lot of movement. So my question is this; How much of a job is it to replace the carrier bearing, and roughly what will I be looking at for cost?

Thanks

Best to let a good driveshaft shop do it and RE-BALANCE it too.

I've only done one on an old (1972) F-150 and it was no problem as I recall. Unbolt and slide it out of there and replace...

the carrier bearing is soft mounted on a rubber surround. lots of movement is perfectly normal...your bearing may not even be bad.

this is true. you should be able to look closely at the rubber supporting the bearing and see if it is torn up at all.

i know that when my bearing started going, it started vibrating and about a quarter mile later the whole rubber thing tore completely and it felt like it was going to shake my bed off.

The driveshaft shop did the one on my Chevy while I had them cut the shaft for the Gear Vendors. It's not expensive. I don't know anything about it other than that. If you have to hit it with a hammer to fix it, take it to a shop first. I try to save the hammering for emergencies.
