careful with remote start

last weekend when we were in terrace staying in a motel,the wife went out to the truck in the morning to get the shampoo...i handed her the keys,forgetting to remind her not to touch the blue button as i usually do.she touched the blue button.for no good reason i had the system armed and the parking brake on(brake must be on for system to work)but truck was in reverse gear.button must be pressed twice to activate,but this is the same as the door locks(one for driver's door,second for all others).i was about to climb into the shower when i heard the srarter engage and knew what was coming next.there was a big crash and hissing noise(coolant fron the motel a/c unit leaking out)but the truck stalled so my biggest worry didn't materialise-that the truck would just go through the motel and carry on.in the end,i informed the motel management,called the police to get an official report(they thought it was pretty funny) and got my insurance on the case.i have two decades claim free so this ones a freebee.no one got hurt,and after a long time consoling the wife(she was very broken up over the whole ordeal)we went to stay at her sister's place in town,which in hindsight we should have done in the first place.moral of the story-if you have remote start on a manual trans vehicle,be very very careful.

A guy I used to work with did something like that but his Beemer ended up going through the garage wall and right into his pond in the back yard.

ya,i had to laugh a bit too...but mostly i was pissed that i didn't have more safety's in the system.or that i even had it turned on when i had no intention of using it.it's disabled for now until i can figure out how to add a neutral switch to the zf 5 speed.that's going to take some major work,like tearing the top off the tranny.

i just put a remote start in about a month ago. but luckily i never leave it in gear bc my e brake works extremely well. and i stress to everyone person that borrows my truck "DONT LEAVE IT IN GEAR!!!!" so far good to go lol

I think they usually say right in the directions not to use with a manual transmission...

I was about to say use the clutch switch, but I guess that would defeat the purpose of remote start.

in july the truck is going through a bunch of other work so it will be off the road for about a week.i'll use that opportunity to pull the shift gate off the tranny and machine it to accept a neutral switch.till then-no remote start.i just use it in the winter anyway,so i don't have to battle the weather to warm up the truck.

moral of the story-if you have remote start on a manual trans vehicle, don't let your wife touch the remote.

not too bad-busted taillight,and the back side of the box pushed in.need to do a bit of bodywork(told insurance i'll take care of that part myself)and i ordered the paint,so it should be here tuesday.probably post some repair pics when i do it.
