Looking for any info on what all I need to slap an AOD behind my 289, what year trans, conversion brackets, etc. Read QUITE a few forums on this, and most of them say several different things. Would appreciate any info.

Do you know if you have the later or earlier bell housing pattern?

...

as of right now all I have is the 289, the c4 i had in the truck got pulled apart last week to find out that after only putting 7500 mi on it EVERYTHING in it needed replaced, only good thing left was the case :( So now I'm trying to figure out what car to pull an aod from and what all i have to do to make it shift correctly.

There are two different bellhousings, the later being like the 302 Windsor pattern. If you have the later pattern, it would seem that you could bolt it up, just make sure you have a 28oz flex plate to match what your engine is balanced for. I would shoot for a late model AOD.

Not sure what you have going on as far as carb and what you had planned for the TV cable, but Lokar makes a carburetor bracket, cable, and throttle cable (requirement for the carb bracket, but I made mine work w/o it). You'll also need to set the TV line pressure with a pressure gauge, or have a trans shop do it for you.

Might be able to do this with stock components from something, but I am not entirely sure on what you'd need and from what vehicle. From what I found when I decided to go w/ an AOD on my 5.0L is that a lot of people going from C4 to AOD used the Lokar parts I described above. They are kind of pricey though.

A Fox body Mustang, T-bird, Crown Vic and a couple others will work fine. Stay away from the AOD-E as they require some sort of an electronic connection.

A truck AOD or one from a Lincon LSC (I think) is longer than all the others...they have a longer tail shaft. If you need to swap a tranny...there are many more of the T-bird and Crown tranny's to be had.

I just swapped AOD's in my 1988 T-bird. The high gears were burned up from the previous owner not having the TV cable adjusted properly.

Beware...they are BIGGER than the C4 you currently have. BTW...my 1985 Ranger just toasted a C4 behind a stout 351W. I plan on installing an AOD behind it then running steeper rear gears.

if its a 6 bolt block then any 302 tranny will bolt up if its 5-bolt options are limited, just get a 28oz flexplate(got mine off ebay made by SCAT) or get a 351w flexplate(also 28oz)

specs for mine
1990 AOD from f-150, 1967 289 with mustang dual sump , SCAT flexplate, 91 f-150 starter, tv cable ran to gas pedal, and spectra universal bracket and cable to a mc 2150 carb, 91 f-150 accesories minus smog pump, and art carr shifter

My '86 has a 302 from a 84 Grand Marquis that had throttle body injection. It used a rod that was almost the same as a kickdown rod from a c4. I had to bend it a little but it works great. I have a Edelbrock intake and a Holley 650 DP with that rod.

wow

Thanks for all the tips guys, wasn't really expecting this many replies. Wish I would've known about this site when I origionally put the 302 in the truck a few years ago, would've prevented a LOT of headaches!
