Carb Problems

I have a 1986 Ranger with the 2.0 carburated 4 cylinder that will not start. If you squirt starting fluid into it, it will run for a couple secounds. I looked into the carb and could see gas squirting in, but it won't start. Last time i got it started it ran for a couple minutes then died again, and i had to get 86cookiemonster to tow me home. Any help would be greatly appriciated. We have also checked the timing and it's fine. I have also replaced the fuel pump and the fuel filter.

Is the carb all gummed up? Does the float stick? Have you checked for the fuel in the tank being gasoline and not something else? Is there water in the tank?
If it will run for a few minutes, it may be that the float sticks and then opens and then sticks again, allowing gas into the float bowl, and then running out of gas in the bowl. Take off the lid and make sure the float works.

it could be the same carb I have and it is computer controlled it is the aisian brand made in japan. and it works great when it works but terrible when it doesn't.
check the electrical connections first before tearing into it (I believe there are three connections)
The reason I say wait is nobody carries the gaskets or a rebuild kit for that carb.
the carb is a 2 barrel and it has a ton of vacuum hoses. like I said if it is working, it works great but if not it is a pain.
when mine wasn't working right (short in the wiring)it got about 11 mpg. now that it is working right it gets about 21 mpg.:icon_idea:

Might be bad fuel, poor ignition, dirty carb. Starting fluid is more flamable, and with poor spark it that might be the only thing that will make it run. I say drain the gas if in doubt, and run seafoam through the system.

Yes it should be a 1 bbl carb.

We are still trying to help ianthegreat out with his carb,. problem which turned into an over heating issue, dont ask me how. Might want to read his thread and see if it helps you out any.

it all depends I have seen both. either way I would see if it is a idle screw adjustment or something else like spark or timing before tearing the carb apart.
I was wondering while on topic:is the 1 barrel electronic controlled like my 2barrel or is it mechanical?

I think they have the TPS on them but that doesn't determine how much fuel it gets, it just controls the exhaust emissions system.

I figured out the problem for him. It was really simple, Driver Error, it had no gas in it.
