alright, so i have an '84 ranger with a 2.0 in it. it is completely stock as far as carb and motor. i have taken all of the smog stuff off, i mean everything off. the truck runs really rough and won't stay idling, if i drive it down the road and get the RPMs up it runs smooth but no where in between. the carb thats on it only has to mechanical screws no screws where i can adjust air and gas. i have tracked and found all the vacuum leaks. I'm sure its the carb is trying to compensate for everything that is missing from all that smog shit. what can i do? what kind of carb could i go with? has anyone else had this problem? can i do a 2bbl carb? thanks for any help

Sounds like you still have a vacuum leak. Did you remove and plug the EGR? Did you at any time remove the carb from the intake? Did you check the bottom of the intake because there are vac lines on some under there for the emission controls.

When I first put mine together it would do the exact same...turned out to be the carb base was not sealed properly...it would start fine but would die if I let my foot off the gas...you can test this with a vacuum tester...and there are various causes for the vac readings that might tell you what is wrong...

Again, as I mentioned recently in another post...someone posted a vac gauge reading analysis on here a while ago...I couldn't find it then so I won't try now...but it may have been on google...try searching google for Vac gauge readings and see what you find...

EDIT: I found this link but it doesn't show the vac gauge like the other one...just gives a chart...

EDIT II: Here is the Tech library document...if you can find a vac gauge give it a test...
