Carb is dead

I am working on the pictures and stuff. There was a lot more modding than I expected to make things work together cohesively but I got it working. The wiring still looks like crap but it started first crank after the fuel bowl filled with gas.

I had to do a lot of grinding on the adapter plate to go from the Rochester to the Holley and I had to put new fittings and stuff on the manifold I got all that from lowes. The fitting on the top of the manifold to the left of the carb is where I ran my brake booster. The carb I bought has a connection for the PCV and the Vacuum advance for the Dizzy so I'm good with all my vacuum ports. Everything else is capped off.

I also took a file to the ports on the new manifold to make them all smooth and no burrs, so far it's a really good project I just want to get it buttoned up soon. My dad says he can hear an exhaust valve sticking but I think it's his imagination. I do think I have a head gasket leak, there is water in the oil, I'm hoping it's just from sitting for so long. I need to pull the head anyway sometime and check out the insides.

Okay here is it, I have an OMC 2.3 Intake manifold with a Holley 2300 (350) and emissions deleted. I did this today and it worked! Here are a few pics, don't mind the wiring that is for another day.

I replaced the original water fitting with a 90 degree elbow to a 3/8 barb fitting so that I can run my water hose back to the heater core line.

These are two fittings for the EGR and something else that came out of the exhaust manifold. I plugged with with brass plugs.

I still need to fab up a bracket for the throttle cable and get a new fuel line, the one that is on there is just to see if it would run. And it did!

Cool~ :icon_thumby::icon_thumby:

I like the smoke effects...lol

Are you planning on a shorty header upgrade or other?

I'd throw in a half bottle of the Lucas or some of that engine sealant for smoking...might loosen up the valve seals and help seal them...also tighten up the other seals...if the motor has been running it should be OK...but...

Looks very nice with that carb on there...just a few more bits of fine tuning and off to the races...:)

Excellent!

:yahoo:Yaz gots ta get a SHARTY header! Luv the cat yellr ps pump res!

The smoking is from all the oil and coolant I spilled on the exhaust manifold :DOH!:

Yeah, that happens...at least it wasn't a rattle can of regular paint burning off...lol

Hell yeah man, good work! It sounds pretty strong for sure. The shorty header will add to the coolness! Very awesome. :icon_thumby: Do you have any other plans in the near future?

Very nice. What made you decide to index the carb the way you did? I put mine with the bowl facing forward for convenience with the fuel lines and linkages, and because I could not find anyone saying not to. My truck has the shortest throttle cable that I have ever put on any vehicle.

I put the carb on like that for ease of fuel line mounting.

Nothing wrong with that as far as I know. Any specific plans for your throttle cable? I wound up using an aftermarket cable, Lokar I think. Mine may have actually gone easier with a turn in it, rather than straight out from the firewall as I made it.

I'll be fabbing up a bracket for my stock cable. I'm recently started saving for a replacement longblock. I don't see this engine being as reliable as I would like it to be. I need to drive 2.5 hours just to get to the beach and I don't have the confidence in this truck yet. I'll end up putting an 88' OMC Cobra 2.3 in it they are rated for 120 HP I don't know if that's dolphin power or what because it just doesn't seem right but either way. It comes with the d-port head and is built to take the abuse of higher RPM and load without a transmission.

Next thing is a lift and tires, and probably a re-gear.

good morning..

From what I understand, the basic omc cobra is just an industrial engine block with flat top pistons (it has the turbo drain hole in the block) it probably will come with a slider cam..(something I would change). The intake manifold and Rochester 2GC I believe is what makes it go..That carb has some pretty big venturis..I have one I need to dig it out to check the specs..I'm sure a 2100 or 2300 would work as well for power..

also the mallory diz may be curved for more advance..but it's only centrifugal..(boats like race cars don't need a vacuum can...)

don't forget to install your marine water pump...(it has a brass impeller)..

Yeah the engine only comes with the long block no intake manifold or anything. I'll probably pull the cam out of the current truck and I already have the intake manifold and carb ready to rock. I'll use the ranger dizzy as well. Ill try and Find a shorty header too. What's up with the marine water pump though? Brass impeller? WHAT THE HECK!

UPDATE!

We got the truck all pieced back together today. New fuel line and filter, carb mounted with a custom throttle cable bracket mounted to the existing holes in the side of the OMC Intake Manifold. I found out the thread size for those holes so it was a snap to make the bracket after that. We drove it up and down the street today but I learned my clutch is completely toast. It wont hold for anything at all. I can touch the gas with the clutch out and it will almost free spin.

I also have some wiring gremlins, I want to pull all the wiring out of the truck and rewire the duraspark only. Then I'll go back and wire the sensors in, I'm also going to get rid of the whole key ignition system. It's gonna have a off/on switch and a push button start. That's it, that way if something goes bad on the trail I can just kill it with a switch.

Anyone know how to re wire the ignition system from scratch? I'm sure I could figure it out but It is going to be a pain I think.
