I am in the process of detailing my truck. I have never done a thorough wax job for the paint but I feel that now is the time. I have waxed my truck but I hae been told that the best way to bring out the shine in your truck is to follow a 2 step process, rubbing compound followed by a wax. I have done the single step wax job too many times and it has created a cloudy film over the paint. Can anyone point me in the direction of some of the best rbbing compounds and then the wax I should use after that? Is there anything else involved with bringing my paint back to life?

rubbing compound is a very fine abrasive. It will remove the oxidized surface paint and thin the paint layer. Use sparingly. I would look for the Meguires brand, personally, and follow with Meguires carnuba wax.

being a somewhat of a bodyman and a mechanic, i like to use turtle wax, my dads an accomplished body who painted my truck(well, it was his then, but oh well)

If you have paint glaze, use the clay method. Water sanding with fine, fine grit, then buff with buffer and wax. If you can find it, use Auto Magic. We detail new paint jobs with it. It's sold mostly to paint and body shop. shady

Rubbing compound is for deeper scratches and will be too harsh for what you describe. Use polishing compound.

I'd go to a hotrod website to get tips on detailing. But try a clay bar it will really pull out the color of the paint. Also try what you want to do in a small space that nobaody will notice.
This reminds of the time my neighbor used a steel wool pad to remove the tar from her car. The body guy made money off of her.
