Can't get oil to drain

Tried to change the oil in my 94 today and failed miserably.

I could not get the oil to drain. I bought the truck used and it looks like the previous owner replaced the stock drain plug. The plug had some sort of thumbscrew cap on it. When I removed the cap, there was a hole underneath, but the oil would not drain out. I thought it might be some sort of quick release job, but I couldn't find lever or anything on the side to start the flow.

Anybody else encounter one of these? What do I need to do?

Dorman EZ drain maybe?

You push in on the "thumb screw" and twist it to lock open, oil then drains

It looks similar, but that's not quite it. The cap itself doesn't have a hole for the oil to drain out, and you don't push it down and twist it.. its threaded and screws completely on or off.

I'm thinking I'm supposed to unscrew the cap, and then screw on something else that breaks the seal and starts the oil flow, but I don't know what it would be called or how to find it

I'd go down and get a replacement for the factory drain plug and take whatever gimick-a-gig the PO put in there out and relocated it to the trash can.

Parts stores sell the OE replacements for under $5.

There might be a reason that the modified drain plug was put on such as maybe it was stripped out or something but I agee if you can remove it and try to re-tap if needed and install some type of a more conventional drain plug. Can you take a pic of it and post it??

Ya.. I was also thinking it might have been put in there because the original was stripped, but it looks like replacing it is the only way to go. I'll try to get a picture of it.

You can also get a self tapping oversize drain plug at just about any parts store. In case the threads are messed up, Just get both, a stock one and the self tapping one and return the one you don`t need.

Maybe the Fram Sure Drain?
That requires a hose

My bet would be nothing is wrong with the threads, previous owner just wanted a cleaner method

I googled it and that's exactly what it is.. thanks! At least now I know.
