Alright so about three weeks ago i was driving down the highway in my 2wd 98 ranger with the 3.0 and the 5 speed (truck just rolled over 160k). One of my friends decided to come up next to me and race me. I rarely race but I said screw it why not. Also my led dash lights I put in have been going out so I couldn’t see exactly how fast I was going. I thought I was going around 60 not 75 (don’t ask how I was really tired) and I stuck it into third. Well the clutch didn’t approve of my decision and sliced itself in half in a not so typical way (basically imagine stacking two plates on top of each other, top one spins while the other is stationary). It’s held together but not by much at all (I know you guys love carnage so pics of the clutch are included).Okay anyway we pulled the trans and replaced both the clutch and the slave cylinder. Now we can’t get the input shaft to fully go into the crank and we can’t figure out why. We’ve attempted to install it four or five times with no luck. Anybody have any ideas?
also the pilot bearing looked fine, but a little dry. Could that be part of the issue?
Sorry for the paragraph just trying to give you guys the most info I can at the start so I can get this thing done. I miss my lil truck lol
Thanks guys

Did you use an alignment tool to center the disc?

I second the alignment tool. It doesn't look like much but it is very important in making sure all the holes line up. And it has to be one intended for use on your vehicle. You can't just use any alignment tool and call it good.

Likely alignment as mentioned.

Did you test fit the clutch hub on the input shaft? You sometimes get mystery parts

Yes I did align the clutch. Everything was aligned and ready to go when we tried to put it in. I’ll take some pictures today when I go up there.

When using the alignment tool, there should be no drag at all after tightening pressure plate. It must be precise. I usually have two alignment tools and make sure both run through smoothly. Also clean up the input shaft nice. Lastly, try jacking up the engine from the front to tilt it and give a better approach angle. Cheers.

You should also have the trans in gear... you can then turn the output shaft to turn the input shaft to get the splines aligned,

It is kind of easy to bend the disk if you don't have it aligned and get rowdy trying to cram the trans in.

Had a guy do that and bring the disk back trying to get warranty. :nono:

Does it fit the input shaft?

I used all your suggestions and the truck runs and drives beautifully. I’m not sure how we managed to do it but we did. Thanks guys!
also when I put the trans in gear I took the base arm thing out (like the pivot point if you will idk the technical term) so when I went to reinstall the shifter I was confused why I had no gears 😂
Lesson learned
